I started this project not only for myself creatively, but for the women in our community! These next 52 weeks you will meet women that are an inspiration to our community, who go above and beyond for their families or our small town, who may own their own business, or are just an inspiration to those who love them. Each woman has their own story, their own calling, their own struggles, and their own accomplishments. I couldn’t have said it better “I want to inspire people. {Week Fourteen of Fifty-Two}

“We are just sisters gathering in a field, and we shell run and dance, dance until the end.”

Our small community truly does have some amazing women in it. Going through my list of weeks to try and get caught up and arrange meeting I am amazed in how many are walking among us. This week I got to spend some time with a young woman who has a true gift. She is smart, graceful, amazing with children, and has the sweetest soul. Week fourteen of fifty-two goes out to the graceful Ashley Reed of Shattos School of Dance.

Jan Shatto opened the dance studio in 1976. Shattos School of Dance has been in business for over 40 years. I asked Ashley what called her to be part of this program “I’ve always loved dancing. I started dance when I was two and started helping when I was 13. By the time I was 14 I was teaching classes.” Ashley said. Ashley took over the studio when she was only 17 and says it one of her greatest accomplishments. Now Jan Shatto still teaches a few classes. She teaches her granddaughters classes, a 3 year old Ballet and Tap class and a Kindergarten Ballet and tap class.

The studio is currently teaching 80 students from 2 years of age, to 18. “I teach Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Pointe. My favorite is Tap but I love to teach Ballet.” Ashley said. Ashley recently quit her second job to have more time teaching at the studio, running classes Monday through Friday. The dance studio puts on two dance recitals a year, one in the Fall and the other in the Spring.

I found this quote and loved it “Dance is music made visible.”

My girls have been going to dance with Miss Ashley since they were four and they love it. They started with Ballet and now do Ballet and Hip Hop. When I asked them what they loved the most about their classes they both said “Our teacher Miss Ashley is so sweet.” This program has given to so many children through the years. I was truly thankful to have found this program for my girls, as Douglas is so small and this gives them something to do.

Getting to know Ashley….

What is the greatest blessing or most rewarding from this program….I am very close with my students. We are like a family. My intermediate class helped raise $1,000 for CAJAC Orphanage in Africa.

What is your biggest fear….I don’t really have any. If I am worried about something I just give it to God. I know He will help me through anything.

What is your greatest accomplishment….Taking over the studio when I was seventeen.

What is one thing on your bucket list….To teach dance at an orphanage in Africa.

What is something you want the public to know about you that they may not know….We do a yearly fundraiser for Wren’s Song. My sister in law started Wren’s Song when their daughter they were adopting in Africa passed away.

What is your favorite quote…. “We are just sisters gathering in a field, and we shall run and dance, dance until the end.” Lisa Shannon-A thousand Sisters.

Who inspires you and why….Amanda Peak, my dance teacher and Sarah Witbrod my sister in law for all the work she does to help the children in Africa.

One word to describe “Ashley” and why she inspires you…..

“She is an inspiring person because she is patient. She loves the kids she works with and they love her back. She helps these kids bring out their talent for dance and they enjoy every minute of it. She takes the time to teach them their beautiful dances and makes sure they enjoy it while doing it.” - Alma Monrreal

“Fun and a great dancer. I love to dance!” –Madison Renstrom

“She has a quiet, gentle way about her. She seems to do a great job with the kids, & I really appreciate that!” - Rebecca Kleemeyer

“Motivating! We love watching Ashley share her knowledge and elegance with all the dancers! She's very driven, but so soft and gentle. Our daughter Haley looks up to her so much and just loves her!” - Tosha Robbins

“Caring! She inspires me because she is a genuine person. She has a kind heart and is someone that I have always looked up to. Ashley will always listen to what we have to say and really cares about our wellbeing. She's passionate about dance and has been a great teacher.” - Lisa Townsend

“Loving and a great dancer.” –Allison Renstrom

“She is always willing to go above and beyond for her family and the girls in her dance studio.  I would describe her as caring.” –Sarah Witbrod

“Graceful! She is able to take a roomful of wild 2 year olds and redirect their energy and get them all to dance in a unified motion. Therefore turning it into a beautiful dance with only 30 minutes of practice once a week for just a couple of months. She has the patience of an angel!” –ManDee Moore

{Week Thirteen of Fifty-Two}

“Let your light shine.”

I know I am a couple weeks behind and I was letting it get to me, but also know I am doing this for myself. So in order for it to be successful and grow I know I need to just go with the flow also. This week’s blog is featuring on of my favorite people. She has a heart of gold, her advice and wisdom is breathtaking, and this woman is ever so faithful to our Lord which makes me even more proud of the women she is. This week’s feature goes out to Nichole Sullivan of Blessings in a Backpack.

Blessings in a Backpack is a non-profit organization that provides food to school children in the United States who currently are fed during the week at school, but are at risk of going hungry on the weekends. I know I didn’t realize how many children suffer hunger in our own community. We all seem to be able to turn a blind eye or even think it’s not happening where we live. The sad fact is it is right here! It is happening in our community and most have no clue. This program was started in 2005 in the US and Sheila Harr with King’s Portion brought it to Douglas in 2014. I got this from http://blessingsinabackpack.org/ “One in five American children face food insecurity - more than the populations of New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago combined. During the school week, most of these children depend on the federal free and reduced meal program their school offers. Sometimes, the meals at school are the only ones they get. When the school closes its doors on Friday afternoon, many of these children go home to empty cupboards and empty bellies for 65 hours until they return to school on Monday morning. Who will feed them this weekend?”

The program here in Douglas started with only 35 children at The Douglas Primary School in 2014. It has expanded to all 5 schools here in our small community now. How amazing is that! They serve a total of 85 children this school year. “We are very excited to be extending our services to the summer school children as well!” Nichole says. As King’s Portion, Blessings in a Backpack also runs on donations from the city, corporate and private donations. I asked Nichole how she got involved with the program and what called her to want to be the leader. “I felt called to help at The King’s Portion in some way, last year. Shelia aligned me with the Blessings program at that time. The director was moving and I was asked if I would be interested in being the new director. I didn’t hesitate and knew then that this is why God called me to this program.” Nichole said. Once a month they receive their shipment of food from the Food Bank of the Rockies. When I asked what it all entails to get ready for the weeks Nichole said “It takes my husband and I an hour or two to organize, shelf and process the shipment each month. We then come in each Sunday afternoon and get all the food for the week ready to be packed. Every Monday night our family and volunteers come in to fill all 85 bags with the current week’s food. We have amazing help and volunteers. Felica Smith from MHCC is a huge help also as she delivers all the bags to the schools after we have filled them for the week.”

“At the end of the day it’s not about what you have or even what you’ve accomplished…It’s about who you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made better. It’s about what you’ve given back.”

I love that my children and Nichole’s children help fill the bags and understand that we are there to help, to serve, and that we are truly blessed as some are not as fortunate as we are. I asked Nichole what the greatest blessing from this program was and what was the most rewarding. She says “One of the greatest blessings from this program is seeing the children’s faces light up in excitement from the blessing in their backpack and knowing they have food to keep them full over the weekend. I would say the most rewarding part of this program is serving with my husband and children and all the teachable moments it has had. To see my children pray, pack bags, and be excited that the children have food is the best reward.

Getting to know Nichole…

What is your biggest fear….Something happening to my husband or children!

What is your greatest accomplishment….My two beautiful children and my amazing husband.

What is your biggest struggle running this program….My biggest struggle /fear for the program would be there are children who need food and aren’t getting our help.

What is your favorite Bible verse….Philippians 4:4-7 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

What is on your bucket list….I would love in the near future to go on a family mission trip.

What is something you want the public to know most about this program….It is an amazing program designed to help children in times of need, especially right now with the economy.

Who inspires you and why….Lysa Terkeurst all the amazing things she does at Proverbs 31 ministries. I inspire to be more like her and bring hope and love to so many! I also love Joanna Gaines and her beautiful work/touches she does on homes!

What is your favorite quote….”Let your light shine!”

One word to describe “Nichole” and why she inspires you…..

“Creative! She's an inspiration because she has an enormous heart that cares about and for everyone.” - Tosha Robbins

"Gentle.  Nichole is a tender lady, with a sweet and gentle spirit.  She has a calming presence and is always encouraging and interested in others.  She is a dear person!" - Elizabeth Ostrander

“Beautiful! I first met Nicole when I started working at the school. She made me feel welcome right away without hesitation. She has a beautiful personality, and beautiful inside and out.” –Sherry Evans

“Genuine!  Nichole just has one of those pure souls, untainted by the cynicism of the world around her.  Always pleasant, always helpful, always sincere, Nichole blesses everyone who has the chance to meet her.  She is a beautiful soul!” –Becky Soske

“Pure! Nicole is pure sweetness! If you are ever having a bad day just go to Nicole & she will pick you up & she truly cares about what might be wrong. I am blessed to know her & the children are blessed to get to be around her. Woman of God, sweet friend, wonderful mommy & faithful wife.” –Bridget Stinson

“Sunshine. She is an inspiration because she is so kind and always has a smile on her face, I love her positive attitude.” - Amelie Tomlin

“Family. She is a wonderful mother and wife who is very devoted to her family. That includes her extended family as well. She is always there if she is needed.” –Jamie Sillivan

“Sweet-spirited! Nichole has such a sweet presence about her. She is kind-hearted and has a true interest in others. She is the kind of person that lights up the room with her smile!” –Abby Harris

“Caring! She does anything she can to help anyone in need and has a big loving heart.” - Sherril McClure

“Self-sacrificing!! Nichole is so unselfish in her actions, always placing another’s' needs above her own. She would go to the moon and back for her boys and husband. It doesn’t matter if she is busy, or if she is going through her own moments of struggles, or sick in bed, she stops what she's doing and gives of her time, love and energy to those near and dear to her.  On one occasion recently, Nichole was very sick, she sacrificed herself for the needs of the students, and made sure their backpacks were filled with food...all 85 backpacks to be exact. During that same time, (and many other times), she has stopped throughout her day just to say "hello Sheila, was thinking of you today, praying for you, is there anything I can do for you"? Such self-sacrifice this woman has. Not to mention a sweet gentle spirit. Immediately one scripture comes to mind when I think of Nichole and her self-sacrificing ways. In John 15:13 it says; "Greater love has no man than this, that He would lay down his life for his friends". That describes my dear friend Nichole! I'm blessed to have her in my life, and as a dear friend.” –Shelia Harr

“Sweet and caring! I have known Nichole since our kids were in the same daycare years ago.  She is one of the kindest, most caring, and giving ladies I know.  I admire how much she takes the time to make someone's day special.” – Mandi Seipel

I love Monday evenings. I love to watch the children’s excitement to help and willingness to do this teaches them so much. This program is near and dear to my heart and my children’s hearts. My children and I have been volunteering for a little over a year and I was super excited to hear Nichole was taking charge. I knew she would be the perfect fit for such an amazing program.

Thank you again Nichole for allowing me to question you, and take images for this project. Your truly an inspiration!

"Adventure is out there!" https://sweetpeasphotos.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/3/-adventure-is-out-there

I know I said I would do a blog every week on one woman from our community and I really am struggling this week to get with it. See we went on a magical adventure over our spring break and I had been caught up so every week a blog would run until this week. With the huge winter storm and our crazy schedules getting back to normal I will not be able to get one done until next week. As much as it has weighed on me to keep up I also have to be realistic, I have a family and a business and I cannot let one week behind schedule get me down not after the magical week we just had. So instead this week I will be showing off our vacation photos. Some are from my camera, but I took a lot with my phone. Yes me taking them with my phone, I know I will get flack for that but it was worth not taking my camera to every park. We purchased the memory maker with our vacation package and I will tell you now it is so worth every penny! There is a cast member from Disney everywhere, and with the magic bands they take your pictures and just scan your bracelet. So easy and so worth it!

To start our trip we had kept this secret from our girls, they had no clue we were going to Disney World in Florida. Yes they knew we were going this year but had no clue when. They thought we were headed to Denver to see the eye Dr. or that’s what we told them anyways. Once we got to Denver airport with them still watching a movie in the back, we had asked them to open a package. This package had a note attached and they had to read that first (I recorded the whole thing) the note was a map of Florida and written on it in big letters was “Allison and Madison Surprise, we’re going to Disney World.” Inside were all about Disney items, a new outfit, autograph books, a key chain, their magic bands for the parks, and hair bows. Man were they excited, the screams, the silence, the worry, and then more screams! I will tell you as hard as it was to keep it a secret. It was so worth the wait just to see their expressions and utter excitement.

"Art of Animation Resort" where we stayed.

We did all the parks, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and one of the water parks Typhoon Lagoon. We spent two days at Magic Kingdom and I could have spent all week there, by far my favorite out of all of them. We then spent a day at each of the others. I would say you could do Hollywood Studios and Epcot in one day if you needed, but the break in between was nice.

At Magic Kingdom, Cinderella’s Castle was amazing. Just the size of everything there is a lot to take in. But the castle is breathtaking and beautiful. The shops, the flowers, the sites, oh and the people wow were there a lot of people. For two days we did rides, ate great food, shopped, hung out with princesses, walked more than I had in months and took in the amazing fireworks and parades. It was a blast and would have to say Splash Mountain was my favorite ride and we managed to do it twice in one day without waiting in line.

We had dinner at Cinderella's Royal Table and got to meet five more princesses. This is another reservation we had paid for before the trip.

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique the girls got their hair done, got to pick out a princess dress and got their pictures taken by a photographer in the shop. Allison was Belle and Madison was Ariel.

Now I thought when I was planning this trip which by the way took us two years, but only nine months of that we actually had our dates and tickets. If you want to do most of the stuff like the extras, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or the Wild Africa Trek you have to call way ahead to get in on the days you’ll be there. Now they are pricey but in my option if you’re going to go, you might as well spend the money to do it. I knew our girls would love to go to the boutique and be a princess for a day, and their faces and memory’s from that day will be well treasured.

"Enchanted Tales with Belle"

At Animal Kingdom we had some weather. It rained most of the morning, but we still enjoyed our time there. We did the Wild Africa Trek and got to be closer to the animals then most. We walked over Hippos and Crocodiles on a bridge in the air, had lunch in the middle of elephants and giraffes, and the guides then take you through the park and stop and watch. I loved it, now the girls like it but if it hadn’t rained on us I think they would have enjoyed it much more. We also say the Lion King Show which was a favorite also. The things you can do are endless and one of the girl’s favorite rides there was Expedition Everest, Legend of the Forbidden Mountain. We also got really lucky on this ride and did it twice.

The morning we went to Hollywood Studios was probably the hottest day we had there. I am super thankful we were indoors most of that day. We only stayed in this park the better morning, and rode The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror which I also rode 20 years ago. The girls weren’t sure they wanted to do this ride, but mom was going to make them try it once at least. Let’s just say it isn’t on their list to try again, but I will do it again. Love that ride, but I am also love extreme rides. We got our pictures taken, rode a few more rides, and ate lunch and the headed to the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. This was extreme and they will not let anyone on that isn’t 8 or older. We now know why. The girls will probably love this ride when they get a little older but it is fast, intense and when they got off of it they both hit us and said “never again”. This ride was my husband’s favorite and a couple days later we found out Steven Tyler from Aerosmith was there and rode his own ride. Now that would have been cool to see.

Now Epcot was cool, but probably not one I would need to go back to. For rides we missed out on a few with our fast passes and some were closed, the flowers and characters in topiary displays in the gardens were beautiful and the food was amazing. In Epcot they have eleven countries: Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, the United States, Japan, Morocco, France, United Kingdom and Canada. You walk this big circle and see building and people from these countries. You also see way more princesses and characters from movies there also.  Now the IllumiNations, Reflections of Earth fireworks show were amazing. We had gone later in the day just so we could see this that evening. I would recommend that show to anyone.

Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park was fun. It’s not as big as some water parks but still enjoyed our day relaxing and playing in the pools. The park has sandy beaches and we enjoyed the lazy river that wraps around the whole water park. We even had a few drinks and meet a lizard that wanted to sun bathe on my beach towel.

As much as none of us wanted to leave our Disney vacation we still had a few days left to spend with my family in Florida. My Uncle Frank and Aunt Sandi let us stay with them for a few more days while on vacation. Now not to say or stay at Disney wasn't amazing because it was but staying with family was so nice. The girls didn’t want to leave when we did, and I think it was because they have their own pool.

Now I have been to the ocean, and I love it. I love water, sand between my toes, the smell of the ocean breeze, and the sun.  We had planned to go to the ocean with Frank and Sandi months before we came and we were so lucky to get a beautiful day. We drove to Cocoa Beach, Florida for the day. The girls had never been to the ocean and they loved it. What’s not to love! We walked to beach, swam in the ocean, found a ton of sea shells, and took a few family photos. It was a beautiful day, and I could have stayed there forever.

Day nine of our trip and the last full day we had, we headed to Sea World. Love, love, love Sea World! I am so an animal person. I think I could have a zoo or even an aquarium if I only had the money.  The girls watched in amazement as dolphins, seals, and killer whales did tricks and shows. Now Sea World has some amazing rides too. The only problem was the girls were two inches to short for two of them. So Greg, Sandi and I did those and well I may have made my husband go do one again, so I could be in the front. Yep I love my rides! After some ice cream and a few shows we headed back to the house to finish off our last night in Florida and enjoy some cards and the pool.

This vacation was much needed and well worth the wait. I know it will be an adventure of a lifetime and so many memories were made. I am truly blessed to have such a hard working husband who made this happen for our family. This time with my family was amazing! If you have never been I would say start saving and make it happen. It is truly the most magical place on earth and well worth every penny!

{Week Twelve of Fifty-Two}

“Live the Life you Love, Love the Life you Live.”

This week’s blog was one of my favorites as I got to learn something new about this incredible lady and have an afternoon full of laughs and a long talk about life. She is one of the most creative women I know. She has the best heart and a beautiful soul. I first met this woman when she ventured off in her new business and I fell in love with her work. I probably own more than a dozen things or more she has created for me, all hanging around my home. Week twelve of fifty-two goes out to the creative, inspiring, and amazing artist Kari Palmer of Kari’s Kustom Creations.

Kari’s Kustom Creations is one of the best little home businesses I have come across in years. Not only is every sign, shelf, or nit knack home made, but they are all beautiful. She has been in business for over two years and is busier than ever. I asked her what made her want to start this adventure as I know how much a home business takes. “For me, being just a mom wasn’t enough. I needed something more, something to do for myself. Don’t get me wrong being a mother is number one but as a stay at home mom I wanted to also work as I can’t sit still. So this was the best of two worlds. I get to stay home with my kids, and I get to work and show my children that even being a mom you can work and have a family.” Kari says. Kari wanted to decorate her home but didn’t have a ton of money to do so, instead she does it homemade. Her walls are covered with her work but also a few store bought items. “I love homemade, good quality things to decorate my house.” Kari said. I asked her what made her choose Kari’s Kustom Creations and she said “My husband helped me with the name. I wanted something different, but it was also hard for me to see my name out there. When I started I wasn’t very good, I had no idea it would take off like it has.”

In a home business sometimes your home turns into a shop, well that is true in Kari’s case. Her kitchen was covered in Easter orders ready to go out the door, signs stacked along the walls, and paint and wood working tools along the counter. She giggled and smiled when I asked her what her husband thought of all the orders and work around the house. “He is amazing! It doesn’t bother him and he just goes with the flow. I say I am sorry all the time for the mess. I would eventually love to have a little area or shed in the back but that may be awhile. My husband helps me so much. He builds things I can’t, he cooks dinner after a long day at work so I can finish orders, runs orders to the post office, and he even takes the kids for a couple hours while I work. He is amazing and I wouldn’t be doing as well without all of his support. I cannot say enough about the amazing man I am married to who puts up with all of this and lets me be who I am.” Kari said.

I thought of Kari’s kitchen when I saw this quote and I know she’ll giggle when she reads this. “I’m not messy, I’m creatively organized.” While walking through her kitchen she showed me her kitchen drawers and so had your basic kitchen stuff, but most had craft stuff galore. Hey when you work around your families schedules, being a mom and also run a business without a huge space a girls got to do what a girls got to do. I loved it, and we both laughed as she showed me her work space, which is the kitchen.

If you have ever seen Kari’s work you know how amazing it is. I asked her what her favorite thing to create would be and Kari said “I love using the jig saw and my favorite sign to recreate would be the Montana signs. I am a Montana girl through and through.” I have tried my hand at making a sign or two and the writing, the letters, and the spacing is always an issue for me as I am a perfectionist when it comes to my own work. So while I watch Kari write out the letters and do it all freehand I am in amazement. She does all her signs freehand! She will use a stencil once in a great while but only when there is certain font someone asks for in their sign. I asked her what it takes to place an order or how does she come up with all the beautiful things she does. Kari said “Most of my orders are something my customers have sent a picture to recreate or a quote they want made into a sign. They can either send an email with a picture of what they want or Facebook message me on my business page requesting a certain thing. I get ideas from pinterest but most are custom orders that they have requested. I haven’t had time lately to come up with my own designs.” Kari makes close to 30 signs a week on top of her family schedule. She says Christmas is her busiest time of the year and that she is more motivated during the holidays.

I asked Kari what inspires her to create, to do this day in and day out. “Words inspire me.  I love a good quote or a verse or especially a good speech.  I'm very emotional and a good speech can make me cry my eyes out... No political speeches lol...I'm talking Monty Williams eulogy for his wife, even Peyton's retirement speech a few days ago. MVP speeches from Kevin Durant, Curry, or Rose, can you tell I am a sports fan.  Hearing another person’s story, I love it.  Hearing a great quote and feeling like it was made for you or seeing how it applies to you and your life.  Good words give me goose bumps and to put good words on a sign I created...gives me a wonderful feeling. Also the people I love inspire me, my husband and my children.  I love to give a gift (who doesn’t) but when it is something I built and made with love it inspires me to create. ” Kari said

Getting to know Kari….

What is your favorite color to paint….Grey stain! I love the look of wood!

What is your biggest struggle running a small business from home….That I have a hard time "shutting it off" like kick back, relaxing, and not working.  As much as I love working, it's good to take breaks too and I have a hard time doing that when it's so easy to grab a sign and work.

What is your greatest accomplishment….My family! My Children! I am so proud of my husband!

What is your biggest fear….Without a doubt something happening to my children.  They are our world!

What is something on your bucket list….When the kids are all in school, I would love to take this business to the next level like have a shop or store front.

What is something you want your customers to know about you that they may not…. Things people don't know about me.  Yes I'm a tomboy, but I'm also 29! I'm also a huge sports fan. The only thing I check more often than my page is my ESPN app. I hate silence.  I always have music going. I write the best when I've had a glass of wine I swear it steadies my hand. Besides my husband, my dog Macie is like a best friend to me.

What is your favorite quote….“Live the Life you Love, Love the Life you Live.” and “Some people look for a beautiful place, some people create a beautiful place.”

One word to describe “Kari” and why she inspires you…..

“I would describe Kari as selfless & a great friend! She always has been there for me. She's the type of friend who can be in the middle of something & she will drop everything to help me out. She's picked up my kids when she didn’t have the time. She made a sign & donated it to one of my sons for a fundraiser smack dab in the middle of her busiest season. She is so selfless & such a loyal friend. I love her & her kind heart!” -Deanna Cheney

“Busy! Kari is constantly inventing some new, adorable, creation for people to enjoy, she has three beautiful kids, a husband and a house to run.  Her creativity never runs out and she manages everything with a smile on her face!  Kari truly is an inspiration!” –Stacy Wood

“Goodness one word to describe this beautiful soul...AMAZING!!!  I am so thankful that she was placed in my life.  I adore her and her sweet family and, my baby Owen thinks the world of her and her boys.  Kari is so kind hearted and she's such a great friend, and mom. Secretly, I wish she has a at least 42 more kids because (1) She's a fantastic mama, and (2) Her kids are ADORABLE!  Kari, thanks for always being there.  You mean more to us than words could describe!  XOXO” –Marissa Beard

“Courageous! To be able to come to a new town and have the courage to start a new business and put herself out there is truly an inspiration.  She manages to run a first class business while being a great mom and an outstanding example of hard work and dedication to our three kids.  I am truly blessed to be able to call her my wife.” –Kellen Palmer (Husband)

“Expressive! I know Kari through her amazing works of art.  I've been stalking her through her projects since she started selling them on social media.  I can't even count how many things are displayed or hung in my home that are touched by Kari's creative hands. Every piece she makes shows how much she loves what she does and how much time goes into each piece.  She takes pride in everything that goes out her door. I have never been disappointed in her work.  She's professional, super sweet and my favorite - a boxer mom.  That's a win in my book.  People with boxers are always good, good people.” –Tiffany Tschida

“My word for Kari Jo is Committed! She is committed in everything she does. Walk through her house; talk to her family or talk to her, everything about her represents a commitment - to being a great mom, to being a great wife and a great person. This attribute then threads itself into everything she does. Which is why everything she does is so great, except cutting hair.” Love Ty

“Oh my gosh...I don't know if I can pick just one!! Creative, Talented, Awesome, Giving, and Gifted!” –Stephanie Melchor

“Kari is my daughter so the love I feel for her is beyond words but when I think of just one word to describe her it would be "determined". She is the most determined person I have ever known.  I have witnessed her determination in every aspect of her life; from early childhood through high school to becoming a wife and young mother.” -Jane Uribe

“Esteemed.  Kari is held in high regard and respected by those who know her. She is always there for her family.  She patiently helps the kids when they want to do a craft project, or bake cookies or play a game. I am amazed at her ability to manage a family, work at the fitness center and also run a successful business.  One of Kellen’s loves is coaching.  Both she and Kellen have a passion for basketball, and the Chicago Bulls. Kari is there to pick up the slack at home when Kellen is gone and Kari supports and encourages him in this endeavor. Kari Palmer:  A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. Proverbs 22:1” -Melody Rohrer

"Goodness!  Kari has the biggest heart, works harder than any stay-at-home mom I know and is the most creative soul. Her work is impeccable, her friendliness means so much and she is a role model for any mom to follow. I am so thankful to have Kari in my life, not only as my sign maker, but as my friend!” –JoEllen Hockley

“Kari is a beautiful, talented caring person.  As Grandparents to Kellen and Great Grandparents to their three beautiful children, we have been the recipients of several of Kari’s Kustom Creations.  We appreciate your kindness and thoughtfulness.” -Walt & Louise Schock

"Driven! Would be the one word I can think of to describe my daughter.  She is hard working and constantly drives herself to provide a good living and quality life for her family while at the same time; she strives to put out quality products for her customers. Like all artists, she is constantly improving her work product.” -Joe Uribe

"Compassionate! Would be a word we would use to describe Kari. She is compassionate about her family, home, craft and her physical well-being. She never does anything half-heartedly. We are privileged to have her as a granddaughter-in-law and truly admire her!” -Vonnie Fifield

“Kari is the most “human” superwoman I know.  I say human because behind that beautiful smile, bright confidence, and infectious laugh there is a real woman there.  She is a dedicated wife.  She is a committed mom.  She is a loving daughter.  She is a constant friend.  She wakes up every morning determined to make her family’s life the best it can possibly be.  See it is easy to be superwoman, that title infers magical powers that take no effort at all.  But not Kari, she works hard for what she wants.  If that isn’t admirable, I don’t know what is.  Oh, and all of our houses look cuter because of her amazing talent.” -Malory Janzen

Kari was so much fun to capture. She is shy if she doesn't know you very well, but once she gets to know you, you can see how much love for life she has and the work she does is her true passion. I have used many of her pieces in my sessions. If you haven't checked her work out I highly recommend it. She is talented, creative, love sports, and has the best laugh! Thank you Kari for all the work you have done for myself but also for being that mom we all look up to and admire. Your are a true inspiration to so many and I for one am honored to feature you on this blog. So thank you again for all your hard work and can not wait to see what the future holds for you!

"Teach to Inspire!" https://sweetpeasphotos.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/3/-teach-to-inspire {Fifty-Two Weeks}

I started this project not only for myself creatively, but for the women in our community! These next 52 weeks you will meet women that are an inspiration to our community, who go above and beyond for their families or our small town, who may own their own business, or are just an inspiration to those who love them. Each woman has their own story, their own calling, their own struggles, and their own accomplishments. I couldn’t have said it better “I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say because of you I didn’t give up.”-unknown

{Week Eleven of Fifty-Two}

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

Week eleven is just a little different, not because of the women in this challenge this week but because with so many amazing women to capture in our wonderful community I know I won’t be able to get to all of them. So this week I am doing two amazing women who have touched my girl’s hearts, who have eased my worries, and who are both inspirational for those they teach. They both are amazing at their jobs, both have the best attitude about life, and both strive to make a difference in children’s lives. Week eleven of fifty-two goes out to Rachel Saunders (Ms. Saunders) and Ashley Bargen (Ms. Bargen), second grade teachers at the Douglas Intermediate School.

Now we all know as parents especially mothers how hard it is to drop your children off at school on their first day and really not know who their teacher is, how they will do during the day without you, and how hard it is to let some of the control go to those we entrust our children with more than eight hours a day. Yes it is hard! This year was a hard year for us in the beginning as we split our twins up into two different classes, two different teachers, and on top of that a new school. See in our community our grades a split up into grades and different schools. Kindergarten and first grade are together in one school, and then second grade and third grade are together in another school and so on. Moving to a new school and new staff was a huge change. But after a couple weeks we all got into the swing of things again and learned we made a great choice splitting the girls up. We have gotten some amazing teachers through the years and all have been just what our girls needed but this year our girls have grown leaps and bounds.

My Miss Madison got put in Ms. Saunders class this year and man are we so thankful for her! Ms. Saunders has a way about her that encourages, brings shy kids out of their shell, and her teaching and techniques are fun and exciting. I asked Rachel what made her want to be a teacher and she said “My senior year my sister took me for show in tell. I just loved it, it was so much fun. That is when I knew what I wanted to do.” Rachel went to Colorado State University and has been teaching at DIS for two years. I asked if she will always be teaching second grade or if change would be good. “I don’t see myself settling, and maybe someday I will try something new. But for now I am happy where I am. Second grade has been amazing and the children are the best.” Rachel says.

My Miss Allison got put in Ms. Bargen’s class and she has been the perfect match for Alli. Not only can she read her when she is having an off day, but she can also slow her down and has taught her that being a leader is a good thing but to also look outside the box and be more respectful to others. I have learned that even though my girls are twins they are two very different children and this change has been so important for their education but also for their social skills.  I asked Ashley what made her want to become a teacher and Ashley said “I didn’t always want to be a teacher. I explored the medical field first. I was looking into becoming an OBGYN but there is a large amount of schooling and I didn’t really want to be in school forever.” We laughed because now she is in school every day just as the teacher instead of the student. “I love children’s drive to learn and fell in love with it.” Ashley said. Ashley went to college at Chadron State Collage and has been teaching at DIS for 3 years now. I asked Ashley if second grade was the only grade she would like to teach and she said “I would go up in grade and would not be opposed to it, but I love where I am and love the people I am working with right now it is where I want to be.”

I love all the teachers and have gotten to know several amazing ones in the last few years. I found this quote when I was working on this week’s blog and thought wow how true is this. “The influence of a good teacher can never be erased.”

Ashley and Rachel are energetic, positive, fun, goofy, and you can see the love they have for their jobs and the kids I have watched them teach and they have so much fun with their students, the room is always filled with positive energy, smiles, giggles and warm hugs. We did their interview together and so much of what they said was the same. I asked them what they want their students to take away from their classrooms and the both answered “well rounded in school and out of school, more respectful, good people skill and to become better people. We want them to be able to carry a conversation with adults, and to continue their love for learning” and the list goes on and on. They both want to inspire their students by over celebrating to good, being positive role models and showing them how to be good people outside of the classroom also. I asked them both what is something they would want their parents to know about them that they may not know and they both answered “We want what’s best for each child, this is a safe place, we love them like our own, that we want to meet their needs and we are always here.” I am truly thankful for Ms. Saunders and Ms. Bargen they have inspired not only me but also my children. Their love for education and caring for their students is truly inspirational. We are so lucky to have such amazing teachers to teach our children and they all work so hard for all of our kids.

“To describe Rachel in only one word has been quite challenging! There are hundreds of words that came to mind when I think of Rachel. I suppose if I have to pick just one it would be RADIENT! We were lucky enough to have Ms. Saunders for our youngest son’s 2nd grade teacher her first year teaching. I say lucky because our boys have had first year teachers before and they’ve always been either a treat or a very trying year. To say Rachel was a treat is a HUGE understatement. Rachel radiates happy. She is like a little ball of sunshine. Her love, passion, care and concern for her ‘kids’ just glow from her. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t have any younger children that will have the opportunity to be ‘under her wings’ for a school year. Keep shinning girl, we are definitely blessed by you.” -Janae Archuleta

(All my girls wanted for their birthday this year were shoes just like their teachers!)

I am truly grateful and blessed to have these two amazing women teaching my children. I know that we will truly miss them when we move into 3rd grade but know they are part of our family now and will forever be grateful for what they have done for us. What better examples for my girls and all the girls out there, two beautiful women inside and out who truly care and love the job they do. So thank you for allowing me to capture you, and how honored I was for you both to sit down and tell me more about yourselves so that more will know the amazing and inspirational women you truly are. Thank you!

{Week Ten of Fifty-Two}

“It is what it is.”

I first met this wonderful woman when joining the primary school PAC (parent advisory community) three years ago. I knew of her but hadn’t met her in person. She is one of those women who you can talk to for hours and still feel like there is more to say. She is a smiling face, a warm welcome, and above all an amazing lady who puts her patients and family first. Week ten of fifty-two goes out to the amazing Doctor with a heart of gold who loves her patients, Dr. Dee Engle of Memorial Hospital of Converse County.

If you have been a patient of hers or still are a patient you know how much work and love she puts into every patient. Dee grew up north of Lusk on the family ranch. She went to school for a total of 9 years and then on top of that 3 years of residency. She has her bachelors in science from the University of Wyoming, got her medical degree in family medicine and obstetrics from The University Washington, and did her residency in Rapid City. I knew it took a lot to become a doctor but wow. I asked her what made her want to become a Dr. and Dee said “I was always interested in science and community work. I knew in middle school I wanted to do something in family medicine. I love being around people. I thought I would be a nurse but then decided I wanted to be in charge and have my own patients. Being in family medicine you get to learn the family’s dynamics and watch the families grow in each stage of their lives.” Dr. Engle is a family medicine with obstetrics doctor at MHCC and has been here for eight and a half years.

I admire this woman for so many reasons but one is she holds it all together so well, even when she may not think she is. I asked her how hard it is with her job and raising a family. I know just being a stay at home mom like me is hard I can’t imagine having a full time job on top of a family. “Balance is hard! This is my biggest challenge. A patient may come in when I may or may not be on call and when I have to tell my family it will take a while it is hard for me. I would love to be in both places at once and sometimes my family has to be second. Thankfully my family is very understanding and I don’t have to do this very often.” Dee says. Like most doctors and nurses, she works at her clinic but also one week night a week and one weekend a month. She also is the chief of staff, has board meetings and finds time to volunteer at her girls schools on top of her already busy schedule.

Making a difference in people life is something Dee does and you can see that with every patient she takes care of. I asked her what she loved most about her job and she said “Making a difference in people’s lives. I love being a part of such an important family experience, from the birth of a child, to taking care of the family year after year.” As we talked about family, work and life I wanted to know what she would want her patients to leave her office feeling like. “That I listen, that I care, and I am here for them big or small. My patients are very important to me. They are all unique, very respectful, and are open to other ideas and thoughts about an approach I may want to try. I truly love my job and the people I get to treat and care for.” Dee says.

Now I know the hard worker and amazing women Dee is, just from the 3 years I have known her. But something I didn’t know and her patients may not know is she worked for the Lusk Harold in the summers as a kid. She did this for almost 4 summers. She did the article “What’s the scoop”, interviewing, wrote the stories, took pictures, laid it all out and then it was printed in the Torrington paper. Who knew right! She says she loved it and it was a great summer job.

 Getting to know Dee….

What is your biggest struggle….Balance but the hardest thing is delivering bad news to a patient.

What is your greatest accomplishment….Trying to keep all my balls in the air, family, patients, keeping everything running smoothly.

What is your biggest fear….I won’t be able to give my family or patients what they need. Not being able to deliver on a promise or cause emotional hurt.

What is something on your bucket list….Traveling the world! Would love to see Australia.

Who inspires you and why….Florence Nightingale as she was compassionate, my patients inspire me and my parents for their hard work ethics.

What is your favorite quote….”It is what it is.”

One word to describe “Dee” and why she inspires you…..

“Selfless! She would do anything for her "momma's”! –Kelsey Nelson

"Sweet! She makes time to volunteer for our school & community even though she is a very busy doctor. She has a heart of gold & I love her smile & laugh.” –Bridget Stinson

“Hard worker! Great Mother!” –Tanya Seeds

“Thoughtful. Dee is an amazing lady. She is so busy yet she still finds time to volunteer in Maddie's classroom and make special treats for the students! Her thoughtfulness and generosity is inspiring!” –Cathy Dugger

“There are so many words to describe Dr. Engle. The one that I would pick today is compassionate. She is a very busy lady, being a loving wife, amazing mother whom runs her kids around to activities and participates in classroom reading times, a doctor, and a great friend. Her patients are very important to her; she always does what's best for everyone. She's a woman that will stay up throughout the night because she has a laboring mom that she is worried about, but still makes it to her clinic the next day for a full day of work. Wow, what a truly amazing and inspirational women!!!” –Dani Geer

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart” Her love for her patients is only felt in there heart and hers. The emotion you see, are true feelings of love from the heart.” –Kurt Engle (Husband)

“There is truly not one word to describe Dr. Engle I would describe her as calm and optimistic. She is not only an amazing family medical doctor to our community but also a friend. Being a great doctor requires more than years of medical education and thousands of hours spent in residency. You need to be trustworthy for your patients and in return trust them even when they may appear to be very similar to yourself or those that couldn't be more different. What do they all have in common? Is that they need you! And that is why I think Dr. Engle is a great assist to our community.” –Manda Smylie

“Intuitive! She has an amazing intuition that she follows and it has helped a lot of people!” –Laura Moore

“Genuine!” –Maureen Crane

“Selfless!  She gives and gives and gives and gives.  Not only to her patients, to her peers, the nursing staff, her family, her community, the Girl Scouts, the schools, her students, and lastly herself.  One dedicated women!” –Beckie Oliver

“Devoted! Dr. Engle is the epitome of the word. She is devoted to her family, patients, and community! I truly do not know how she keeps all the balls in the air but she has definitely earned the title of a professional juggler. She is devoted to being a wife and mother, regardless of the long hours she works, they are her priority. She is dedicated to her profession as a physician, always staying educated about best practice and changing recommendations in healthcare regarding her patients. She is loyal to memorial hospital of converse County and the community of Douglas. She continues to be the Chief of staff at MHCC; it's her expectations for safety and excellence that makes our hospital rise about the standard. She is very active in supporting the athletics in converse County as well as literacy in the schools by reading to her daughter's class each Thursday. I am very lucky to work alongside her as a professional and to call her a friend. Dr. Engle is a woman of strength and aspiration.” –Holly Sasser

"Capable" Dr. Engle is always capable to handle life in so many directions. She not only is an excellent Physician but also puts aside a great amount of devotion to her family. I would also think of her as a "Superwoman" We can always count on her, we are extremely fortunate to have the privilege to work with her in Labor and Delivery.  She will go above and beyond to make sure the patients are treated at the highest level possible. Thank you for all you do each and every day.” –Beth Pirnie

“Dedicated! She is dedicated to her patients, right from the start, in their mama's belly, through all the different challenges that life brings their way. But, maybe more importantly, she is dedicated to her family. Unless I am seeing her as a patient, I never see her without at least one of her daughters in tow. She volunteers at their schools, bakes them cookies, and takes them to all their different activities. She inspires me to be a better mom, through my health and my love. Thank you, Dee!” –Karla Penfield

Thank you Dee for all you do for our community! You truly are an inspiration and have touched so many lives with your great kindness and amazing heart. It was a honor to capture you at work doing what you love and wanted to say “Thank you”.

{Week Nine of Fifty-Two}

“Color outside the lines.”

Being the creative person I am, one thing I love to do is paint. It is my release from stress, and a way I can create something. This week’s lady is one who can take old, junkie, worn out things to new and improved one of kind things. She is full of creative ideas, has an amazing attitude about life, a heart of gold and loves all things junk. She is an inspiration for me and for all her clients and followers. Week nine of fifty-two goes out to the inspirational and super creative Merilee Miller of Flippin’ Junk.

If you have ever been out to Flippin’ Junk you have seen all the amazing antiques and all the junk turned into reusable, fresh, and creative things. Not only can you find that one of a kind piece of furniture, but Merilee can also do custom orders. She has been open since December of 2013 and I asked her what made her want to open her business. “I have a passion for creating” she said.  When opening a business you have to have a name, and so when I asked her what made her choose the name Flippin’ Junk she said “I wrote down thousands of names, and knew I wanted a name that meant something. So when it came down to it Flippin’ Junk was it. It means changing something worn out, outdated, one of a kind, and updating it into something beautiful and that not everyone else has.” I love this quote ““The things you are passionate about are not random. They are your Calling.” This fits Merilee to a T!

Merilee not only makes amazing things but I love her paints. The store sells General Finishes Milk Paint, Modern Masters Metal Affects, and now she can order General Finishes Chalk Style Paint. I redid my bedroom set with the milk paint and with the metal affect and it was a lot of work but it turned out beautiful. It has been over a year since I did my pieces and they still look brand new. This is why I love her products, the paint lasts when done right. “It is super easy to use, it’s the most durable paint I have come across and this is why I sell it. I believe in it!” Merilee says. The milk paint comes in 28 colors and all are amazing to work with. Merilee’s favorite color to paint with is patina green. It is teal in color and beautiful. I would say this is her signature color and it is the best seller in the store.

Merilee has also done vendor/junk shows. She has done two at the Kounrty Junkin Show in S.D. “They are a lot of work. I pretty much have to load the store in a trailer and it takes a lot of time. It’s a great experience and I have learned a lot.  You can find some pretty cool things at these shows but I find a lot of my unique things from picking. “I have traveled a lot of miles out of state. When I started I would go to auctions and sales. Now I have made a lot of contacts, and several people contact me to buy or pick through their things. Old farm houses and out of state sales can have a lot of unique and antique pieces and furniture. I can look at a piece and know what it could become. That’s when I know this piece belongs in my shop. Thanks to my husband for putting in a lot of work and hours with me. Without his support and understanding I wouldn’t be as successful as I have become.” Merilee says

There a lot of Junkers out there, as I call Merilee and all have their own unique way to transform a piece. One thing about Merilee is she stays true to who she is. She may find an idea on pinterest or from a vendor but always stays away from copying the local competition. This is what is so amazing about this woman she is one of a kind. “I don’t want my business to get huge, just to stay in business. So many times more than not I run into furniture picking and it has been done poorly. I pride myself in my work. I may take a piece and have to strip it, replace parts, or even finish work that wasn’t complete. I want my pieces to leave my shop 110% complete and use able.” Merilee says. You can see the pride she takes in all her pieces. From small projects to big she makes them with love. I asked her if it hurts her business being so far out of town. “I have weighed both the pros and cons. Yes it would be nice to be in town and be able to leave work. I think more of the community would know about my shop in town, but it is also nice having it attached to my home.” Merilee said.

I am truly grateful to this women and her many talents. She has taught me not only how to create beautiful things but also how to strive in the world with a creative mind. She is an amazing business women and has inspired me to be a better person in this thing we call life. She not only has her own business, she and her husband are in the process of adopting a little girl. They have opened their hearts and home to a child who has been through so much in life. This is a true inspiration and I know this little girl will grow up in a better place with a mother and father who adore and love her.

“Generous! Merilee inspires me every day to treat others with kindness and respect. Although we have similar small businesses, she could have easily treated me as I was her competition. She has always supported me and welcomed me with open arms. She has been my friend through furniture and paint questions and we have been able to share our ups and downs of our businesses and some of our personal lives. I am so thankful for her friendship and all the love she gives to everyone around her.” - JoEllen Hockley

If you haven’t been to her store I would highly recommend it. Stop in and say “Hi!” you will not be disappointed.

{Week Eight of Fifty-Two}

“Patience is a virtue”

Week eight wow, we are already two months down and this has been so rewarding not only for me personally but for all the women in this amazing community. This week’s woman is such a positive example to not only the women in our community but for everyone who is looking to get fit and healthy. She is educated, funny, strong, and full of life. She has been the best thing that has happened for my confidence and my overall health. Week eight of fifty-two goes out to the inspirational and motivational Kim Pexton of The Body Shop or you may know her from Kim’s LIL Gym!

The Body Shop is 24 hour fitness facility offering a full weight room, cardio room and classroom. Dressing rooms are equipped with showers and lockers, this gym has it all. Kim and her son Carl Kosters own the gym and wanted the community to have other options for better overall health. I asked Kim what made her want to go into this business and she says “I’ve always liked community work.” She got her bachelor’s in social work in 1994, and then went for her master’s in social work. Counseling youth, family planning, tobacco prevention and social work is what Kim used to do, but now does it all in a different way. “I learned I can’t save everybody. I loved what I did, but got burned out and treated badly.” Kim says. I can’t even imagine how hard social work is, working with those who need help and sometimes not wanting to get help. But now you can see the work she does with her clients at the gym has been good for her and her clients.

Before she and Carl opened The Body Shop, which has now been open since October of 2014, Kim owned and operated Kim’s Lil Gym and has been a personal trainer for 10 plus years. I asked her what she had to do to get her training. “It’s really easy, only takes a weekend. I am certified in step, bosu, gliders, bar, pump, pt, and group.” Kim said. The Body Shop has five trainers including Kim. I asked Kim what made her want to become a trainer. She said “It is the closest thing to social work I could come to without diagnosing and charging someone in less than 45 minutes. I love community work and this is the perfect fit.” Kim has been my trainer now for several months and has been amazing. I found this quote that I think fits perfect, well for me and Kim anyways. “When your personal trainer asks you if you’re “ready”, that’s a rhetorical question!” She is an amazing trainer and I wouldn’t be doing as well as I have been without her. But I also pay her to torture me, now that is the crazy part but has been worth every penny.

The Body Shop has some amazing trainers and classes. There are 23 classes all on different days and times. I asked Kim which class is her favorite to teach and she says “Right now its step! We have a great group of people in this class.” The most important thing Kim wants to teach her clients and those who come to your gym is “overall health, being happy out of the gym as well as in the gym is most important. Happiness is a huge part of our lives and makes a huge difference.” Kim said. One thing I have learned through my own process and struggles is what seems impossible today will one day become your warm-up. I would have to agree with how your overall health is the most important. The gym and the people that work there all want the best for every client and the attitudes and positivity is amazing in The Body Shop. This place and these people working here have not only changed my life for the better but also many others lives. I am thankful and so blessed to have them all working with me to reach my goals and cheer me on.

Getting to know Kim….

What do you love most about your job….My clients, personal clients, my people!

What is your biggest fear….Losing my children or grandchildren.

What is your greatest accomplishment….My children! They are good people who love and I am so proud of who they are.

What is your biggest struggle….Myself, life is a struggle!

Who inspires you and why…. Women who take a chance even if it's on their health, their work, or their education.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career….To listen! I am not perfect.

What is something on your bucket list….A mini triathlon!

What is your favorite quote….“Patience is a virtue.”

One word to describe “Kim” and why she inspires you…..

“Fearless! She has vision and is not afraid to put her vision into action. She makes health and fitness approachable for many different people. Douglas is extremely lucky to have an intrepid entrepreneur like Kim.  Her bold and dynamic personality has made her successful and I have no doubt she has more to show us.” –Meghann Boggs

“Intense! She pushes me to do the best and work the hardest. She doesn’t let me get away with just getting by. She's also an inspiration to me because she gives respect to get respect.” –Freedom Howell

“Inspiring! Kim inspires and motivates me to work hard, push myself and to dig deep and to never give up.” –Tiffany Henry

“Joyful, full of energy!” –Virginia Bevers

“Tough! She is an inspiration to me because growing up she always put on a smile even if times were tough and got my sister and I through some tough times. She is one of the hardest working people I know. She went from having nothing and raising 2 kids to working hard and now having 2 successful businesses and living life to the fullest. She has been through more stuff then people will encounter in a life time, but she always put on a smile and worked through it as if nothing was wrong. That's why I look up to her. She is Tough!!” –Carl Kosters

“One word to describe Kim, that is impossible. Motivational! Kim is an inspiration because she does not only personal train clients,  she includes her own life struggles into helping you reach your own goals. Not many people will expose their fears, struggles or worries, but Kim does. She can bring someone out of a slump within your training time just being a great listener, and then giving her insight. She is an inspiration to me.” –Melissa Connolly

“Committed! She started her own business she likes to help people and she cares about other people's health.  Kim is goal oriented and she is funny.” –Teri Rabun

“Whew that's a tough one..... There is no one word to describe my mother! She's a woman of many traits!! She's a very independent, strong willed, go getter! When she says Do you do, but will also drop anything at any time to help whatever you need helped with! If you haven't noticed already, but if you’re a morning person and you happen to be at the gym @530 or whatever time It is she most likely has a smile on her face, I don't think that has ever changed about her! So if I had to describe my mother in one word I guess I would choose incredible.... Because she is! More than just my mother!! I love her!” –Abbie Kosters

“Hilarious! I love working out with Kim because she always keeps a smile on my face while pushing me to do my best! Kim truly cares about her clients and wants the best for them all!” –Sara Trujillo

“Spectacular!  She is an inspiration to be because she believes not only in herself, but in those around her.  She encourages those who may be in crisis at some level in their lives to become a better and stronger mirror of themselves.  She does this through the example of being herself! I recently was devastated with the loss of both my little brother and mother within 3 weeks of each other. Depressed and feeling low, I had the grim task of facing family and friends in California. Before I left, Kim unknowingly encouraged me to move forward, to fight back depression, with the strength of friends and family here. Her crazy glasses, high voltage personality, and c'mon now, let's get on with it' attitude has strengthened not only my relationships with my family but with my friends as well. Kim Pexton is a 'spectacular' example of an amazing inspiration without even knowing she does it!  I am honored to have her in my life!” –Patty Morrell

“Tenacious!” –Joani Fosmo

I would highly recommend The Body Shop to anyone. It is an amazing atmosphere, has amazing trainers, fun classes, and it has changed my life for the better. Kim is such an inspiration and works just as hard for you as you do for yourself. Thank you for letting me capture you, and your gym. Kim, you are a true inspiration and I am truly thankful for everything you have done for me!

{Week Seven of Fifty-Two}

“Tough times don't last. Tough people do.”

This week’s woman is beyond creative, someone who uses her hands to create beautiful things! She is kind hearted, full of spunk, and would do anything for anyone if asked. After spending an afternoon with her and her daughters, watching them all work on orders, laugh at each other over memories growing up in the shop, I felt like one of the family. They all were so much fun to get to know and am so glad I could feature this woman in the 52 week project. Week seven of fifty-two goes out to the amazingly creative Lori Hoyt owner of The Boondocks Flower Shop and Gifts.

Anytime you walk into a flower shop you are filled with scents, colors, and maybe even are flooded with memories from that amazing bouquet of flowers you were given. I just love going into Boondocks, not only for the amazing flowers but for the ladies that work there. Lori has been owner of The Boondocks here in Douglas since 2006, but has been a florist since 1983 starting in Glenrock. Her daughters grew up in the flower shop, and one memory she shared with me was when her girls were little she would have them down at the shop while she was working. When orders of flowers would come in, she would use the big boxes to contain the girls and keep them from crawling everywhere.  It is almost the same now only with her grandchildren. You may go into the shop and it is just Lori, but 90% of the time you will go in and there will be littles crawling all over the floor or even running through the store with giggle, and smiles. Lori says “This is what makes it all worth it. My girls and the grandchildren, they are my life, my world. They are the most treasured part! So many memories I could share about raising children in the flower shop.”

There are so many amazing flowers out there and who wouldn’t love any of them? “You would be surprised how many people don’t like most flowers” Lori says. I asked Lori what her favorite arrangements are to create, she said that the fall fillers would be her favorite although she loves them all. She was raised on a ranch and the reward was always fall. Lori says “The harvest, the sale, the gathering of blessings, the beautiful changing colors. This is my most favorite time of the year and the fillers you can put in the bouquets are amazing to work with.”  I just loved this quote and wanted to use it just for Lori. “Flowers always make people, better, happier, more helpful; they are sunshine, food, medicine for the soul.”

I asked Lori what would be the busiest time of the year in the shop and she says “The busiest Day is Valentine’s Day, but the busiest time of year is May. With Mother’s Day, May Day, and graduations, we are slammed with orders.” She also said Christmas is pretty busy. I did her interview the week of Valentines because I knew the shop would be filled with beautiful flowers, her daughters would be in and out helping, and the smells would be amazing. The week before the shop was taking down the holiday stuff in prep for Valentines and I wasn’t worried at all. I knew the worker Lori was that it would be put back together and beautiful before her interview and it was. The shop was filled with pinks, reds, and everything looked like it had been there for months. That is one thing I have learned about Lori through the years. The shop maybe a mess one day but the next it was all back in order.

Weddings are a lot of work but very rewarding. To see the final result and the bride with her bouquet is what the reward is. Boondocks averages about 30 wedding a year and one year she did 23 weekends with 33 weddings. Now that is crazy busy! But the most rewarding part of Lori’s job is the final tribute bouquets. “I love to honor the loved ones who may have passed. To work with the families to create that one of a kind, maybe even over the top bouquet to say that last goodbye. It is so important to have what they want and to create that for them with honor. To see their smile, to hear the praise but not do it for the reward, but to honor the loved one that has passed and give some comfort to those who are mourning.”

I am a very creative person and I think that is one reason Lori and I get along so well. We both have ideas and creative ways to show case it all. So I asked her how she gets her ideas and images in her head to show case her work. “I am always thinking, you could call it daydreaming. My hands are my tools, and I love to just create.” Lori said. This is one of the biggest struggles for a creative mind is to follow the rules, or do an arrangement that is done in a book. Lori loves to create something different for everyone, so when a client calls and puts a limit on the flowers they want, or what colors they can have or can’t, or even say they don’t like a certain flower can be a challenge. This isn’t hard to do, but with a creative mind like Lori’s it can be a struggle at times.

“The industry is changing! Back when I started there were no credit cards, we had what is called wire service. So when you see an advertisement for the flowers on TV you could call your local store and they would get the flowers ordered and then sent to the location you wanted whether in town or out of town. Now we have more options and for that it sometimes isn’t the best thing. One shop may charge this much for something, but it may cost even more at another.” Lori says. Lori wishes that people didn’t have to pay for flowers. “You shouldn’t have to pay for such a gift” You can tell just by the time and energy Lori puts into every bouquet how much her business means to her. One thing she doesn’t like about the shop is the business part. She would rather be creating and putting her creative thoughts and ideas together then doing the book work. I don’t blame her, I so agree. You can see the love she has for her job, and says ““I appreciate all the business through the years and all the clients/customers that come to her to create works of art for those they love. I love that I get to meet fun and different people from different places. It means so much, much more then I can say.”

Getting to know Lori…..

What is your favorite flower and why….Lots of flowers, I love them all! There is a season for every flower, so I can’t just pick one or even two.

What is the biggest struggle….Rules that others put on me, I don’t play well with others and sacrifices I have made.

What is the best thing about your job….CREATE! Use my hands to make someone’s day.

What is your greatest accomplishment….My girls, to be a mother. I thought being a mother was amazing until I had grandchildren and that is truly amazing.

What is your biggest fear….My house be a mess when I die.

Who inspires you and why….My grandma Evelyn! She was my hero! She made you feel invincible.

What is your favorite quote….My life is full of quotes; most would have to be edited.  But I love “Tough times don't last. Tough people do.”

One word to describe “Lori” and why she inspires you…..

“INTENSE!  My second favorite is formidable. She is intense in her creativity, her love for her family and friends, her fun, her anger, her life.   She inspires me to just get up every day and keep going and to do my best with what life has thrown in front of me.  She truly gives the best she has to her family and her clients.  She goes the extra mile for her customers and all of their special events that they entrust her with. Also, she is intensely funny.  She can make me laugh more than anyone.” -Kristy Grant

"Innovational! Lori is so creative and always has a way of knowing how to express my feelings through her beautiful floral designs. I always enjoy visiting with Lori in her shop.  There is always a friendly heartwarming atmosphere at Boondocks!” –Terry Burton

“Big Heart!” –Mary Grant

“Motivated! She puts her heart into making any event you need her for. I had her do my flowers for my wedding and she was so helpful throughout the whole thing. I knew that I could trust her to handle it, no questions asked. She puts a smile on so many faces with her business.” -Jill Seebaum

“Creative and loyal!” –Ashley Hinckley

“Passionate & Compassionate!”  She has passion for her work and shows compassion to her clients. She loves weddings and takes great honor in her funeral pieces. They are her two favorite things to do.” –Danny Hoyt (husband)

"Caring! Lori and her family are not only amazingly talented florists, they are a very caring family that work very hard to put that extra special touch on each customer order.” –Erika Bevers

“Selfless.  She always goes above and beyond to help others. She never worries about how difficult it might be for herself, and she's always willing to reach out her hand. She has amazing gifts and every day she uses them to make others happy or to comfort them. She's always the first to say, I would love to help with that! It truly amazes me that her selflessness knows no bounds.” –Kaylann Blackburn

“Detailed!  Her flower arrangements show that she cares about them and the person receiving them.” –Kim Pexton

“Caring! She cares enough to give all she has to her family, customers and family. Ironically when her customers come in, whether for happy occasions or for a funeral, Lori gives it her all to make the most special arrangement. If for a “happy day” she makes the recipient smile, for a “wedding” she makes it as special for them as she would if it was one of her won daughters, if for a “funeral” she grieves with you in her own special way. She listens, sheds tears with you and gets to know your loved one. She makes flowers for the funeral that reflects you and your departed. So when customers leave they leave as friends. She cares enough to make each occasion special and unique as only Lori can. Even though she might be busy, she cares enough to drop whatever she is doing to help you. She would give the shirt, literally off her back to help you. Lori is indeed caring!” –Sharon Lovitt

“Fortitude! No matter what she faces, or the pain she endures, whether it be emotional or physical, she pushes on and continues to be her same strong willed, amazing self.” -McKenna Smith

“Selfless! She inspires me to work hard, and to always be there for someone in need, she amazes me how much she can help a family with just a bouquet of flowers. Her art in her work is truly one of a kind.” -Shaynna Hofstetter

“Heart! Lori Hoyt has more heart than most people I know... From her 10 dollar arrangements to her extravagant wedding bequests, nothing leaves the boondocks work room without the heart of the talented Lori behind it! I have grown up with Lori's girls and she has been like a mother to me. She inspires me with her work ethic, her will to always keep going, her ability to solve any problem, and her amazing eye to create! Lori once spent a late night outside the boondocks with me trying to solve life's problems... She had the simplest advice which was to be brave enough to fallow my heart, because I already knew where it was taking me! Lori Hoyt has heart; she is talented, brave, and most of all a friend!” -Christine Hatfield

I want to thank Lori and her girls for welcoming me into their shop and spending an afternoon with me. I loved that you all were so much fun to talk with, interview, and making me feel like part of the family. Lori is truly an inspiration and I am honored to call her friend!

{Week Six of Fifty-Two}

“Love people, use things; NEVER confuse the two.”

This week I am featuring a true woman of the Lord. Who puts her faith, family, friends, and even those she may not know before herself. She is humble, loving, kindhearted, and treasured by many in our small community. I have not known her for long, but in the short time I have she is a true inspiration. Week six of fifty-two weeks goes out to Elizabeth Ostrander, the faithful and loving!

I was invited into her home on a snowy cold day with welcome smiles, and warm hugs from her and her children. See Elizabeth homeschools her children in their beautiful country home. When I started this project I wanted to capture the true, raw moments of those who are inspirational to those in our community and this women was one who was nominated several times. Not only because she homeschools, but also because she has a grace about her in every situation. I got the tour of their amazing home from her three children, holding my hand and showing me everything they love about their home. While Elizabeth and I sit to chat, the two smaller kiddos went outside with their dad to walk their two adorable puppies’ and play in the snow, while her oldest and us sat at the kitchen table to chat. We talked about God, family, kids, school, and of course we had some girl talk. She loves to start her mornings with a devotion, but with small children somedays they have to wait until the evening. Her devotion to Our Lord is beautiful! “Like anything, if you want to be closer to something or someone you have to study it, in this case work at it. This brings me closer to The Lord. I study his word, and do my daily devotions.” Elizabeth says. I can see the love for the Lord throughout their home, and through their children. She makes me want to do better at this in my own home. She truly is inspirational!

I asked Elizabeth what made her decide to homeschool her children “We began homeschooling when our oldest was showing readiness before her age would allow her to be in public school. At that time we lived 30 minutes from town and it wasn’t feasible to come in every day even if we could’ve. My parents worked in the school district for years, and I worked in the district before I was married as a para and also a school librarian in Colorado. “School” and learning had been a way of life for me. As my kids were growing we sort of just eased into the formal aspect and haven’t done anything since.” She says. I am just in awe of her. This is something I know I can not do. Ok well if I had to I probably could. But she does it, day after day, year after year, and she does it with such grace. Her children are in 4th grade, 1st/2nd, and preschool. As I watch them work on their school work, Liz has them all at their kitchen table. She says most days they may sit in their pajamas in the living room, relaxed and working on the couch.

A quote I found after my afternoon with this amazing family and I thought it fit perfect. “Homeschool moms are privileged to witness (sometimes after tears!) the first words our children will ever read. We’re privileged to know everything that’s on the “scope and sequence” for any given school year. Privileged to spend the day at the library when it’s pouring down rain and no one else is there. Privileged to struggle right alongside our kids until we both have the “ah-ha” moment.”

I always wondered what a homeschool mother said about the pros and cons of doing homeschool verses public school. “My pros would be I love that I can teach to their own level. If a child is struggling in an area, we can spend more time there and make sure understanding is happening. I also love that I can teach character qualities. I want my kids to know that fulfillment in life doesn’t come from being a totally selfish, self-serving person, but in a balance of loving and serving others as well.” She says. “My cons are familiarity can breed contempt at times. We have a close-knit family, but having a mom as a teacher and siblings as classmates can be tough. We try and stay balanced in this area by getting involved with people and things outside the home. Our kids need to learn from other adults and interact with other kids. They are in sports and service projects as well as a local home school group.” Elizabeth says. She has been thrilled with homeschooling, but also knows it is not for everyone. “I’m thankful we’re able to home school in Wyoming, but I’m thankful for a good school district here too. We’ve always said if schooling at home is ever not in the best interest of one of our children or our family as a whole, we’ll put them in public school. I want to partner with CCSD#1 even now, because we’re working toward the same goal. I am just on a much smaller scale.” Elizabeth says.

The Ostrander family use the general curriculum called My Father’s World. They add things to it and take certain things out, but say it’s been a good fit for them. This year they are studying Rome to the Reformation. I asked her what style of homeschooling would she classify in their home and she says “We tend to be a bit eclectic around here! Our curriculum is structured in unit studies, with some Charlotte Mason undertones and some classical as well. My primary goal is to install in my kids a true love of learning, that won’t end at graduation.” Elizabeth is the primary teacher in their home however; the biology lessons in the book don’t come close to the lessons her husband teaches the kids when he comes home after a hunting trip! Her middle daughter took a goose foot to show-in-tell at their home school group and showed the kids how to pull on an exposed tendon to get the foot the “wave”. Now that is my kind of kid. My girls would have loved to see that. “I love to get to study alongside my kids and hopefully pass along the love of learning. I want them to have curiosity and the ability to be thinkers. My hardest thing or what I like the least would have to be when I can’t seem to get through a certain area; it makes me question my abilities.” Elisabeth said.

We all know the life lessons we all encounter in the real word are so much more than any school can teach us, homeschool or public. I believe we all have a responsibility to our children to teach them right from wrong, the good and the bad, manners, good work ethics, and most important LOVE. It starts at home!

Getting to know Elizabeth…..

What is your biggest struggle….I love people and serving, encouraging, and helping. My biggest struggle is balancing time for me to refill my own cup. I used to think that if I wasn’t 100% at all times, saying no to someone or something, I was being selfish. I’ve learned that it’s a balance. I need to not get so worn out that I snap and get fussy with my own family.

What do you love most about being a mother….I LOVE my kids! I love that God has entrusted them to my husband and me, and that we get the honor of training these awesome little people. Do they have flaws? Yes, just like me. But it’s amazing to me how God uses my kids to teach me something about myself and Himself on a daily basis.

What is something on your bucket list….I love voice acting. I would love to sometime be involved in a professional production.

What is your greatest fear….I believe that all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose (Rom. 8:28). I do fear many things in this life, but when I hold them up against that truth, it helps me “talk down” the fear.

What is your greatest accomplishment….I have trouble answering this question! I tend to celebrate the small accomplishments, so even the big things have gotten celebrated numerous times, as small steps.

What is your favorite bible verse….I have two, Ephesians 2:10 “We are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to us to do.” And 2 Peter 3:18 “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

What is your favorite quote….”Love people, use things; NEVER confuse the two.”

One word to describe “Elizabeth” and why she inspires you…..

“Pray-er! I aspire to be as mature as her when I pray. She remembers specifics, follows up after a time, and adds things to her prayer list continually.” –Ryan Andrews

“Genuine! She is amazing! It's so hard to think of one word! I admire her for many reasons. She is real, and a true light. She has a close relationship with Jesus, and she shows love genuinely in who she is, and her smile. A beautiful person, woman of God, mother/daughter, She shows His Love genuinely.” –Laura Sahlin

“Warm! She always seems to carry herself w such grace and acceptance of others. She speaks fluently and expresses her feelings effortlessly. All while inquiring into your day/life with great interest.” –Kate Grant

“Kind-hearted! She loves people and she loves the Lord. She is makes me smile and I am encouraged by her words, actions and faith!” –Abby Harris

“AUTHENTIC! She's such a kind and caring friend, full of such wonderful advice, and always willing to lend a listening ear. She's real and honest about her own struggles, never acting like she's got it all figured out! For years, I think it was the first time I heard her speak at MOPS, I've said I wish I could shrink her down and carry her around with me!!” –Cassie Taylor

“Unselfish and Compassionate! She is such a giving person. I tend to be more of a selfish person, but my wife gives freely. She will give anyone the benefit of the doubt, gives unselfishly, and wants nothing in return.” –Ryan Ostrander (husband)

"Timeless!  Elizabeth reminds me of so many women from the 40's and 50's that we seek to emulate today: Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly...her presence is gentle, graceful, tactful, tender, intelligent and Godly.  She carries herself with a measure of quiet strength.  She is a wonderful blessing!” –Becky Soske

"Caring! She genuinely cares about people of all ages and backgrounds and I've seen her demonstrate that in many ways in the 19 years that I've known her. Liz has many talents such as her music and drama background (and college degree in that). I've seen her use those talents in writing, directing, and acting in Christmas, Easter, and Sunday skits, plays, and musicals at church and as an outreach into the community. She's also led singing for the many children who come to Vacation Bible School, using a lot of patience and genuinely caring. She has cared for people who are sick or had surgery by organizing a meal ministry for others to bless them with meals in their time of need. As a Mentor Mom for MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers), I've had the pleasure of being in her discussion group, as well as hearing her speak to all of us on several occasions on a variety of subjects. Liz has suffered from migraines for years, as I have, but she rarely lets that get her down. She continues with her commitments and shows she cares as much as she is able, even while trying not to show how much she's hurting. Liz is a wonderful wife, mom, and daughter and is a great example to others. I'm proud to call Elizabeth (Liz) Ostrander my friend, because I know she genuinely cares!” –Jan Panasuk

“When I told my husband about your writings and that Liz was chosen his word was friendly. Mine is genuine. Liz is one of the most genuine, real, sincere people I know. She has such a friendly heart. We have a rare, close friendship that began not because we were neighbors but because her husband, Ryan helped save my son's life. Liz natural genuineness supported us throughout Colters journey. She will forever be a part of our life.” –Mandi Seipel

“Sweet! She is such an inspiration to me by her faith, her love for God, her parenting, love and her heart for others! She is one of the kindest women I have met! I am so blessed to call her my friend!” –Shirley ZumBrunnen

“Present! The word "present" was the word that came to mind when asked to describe Liz.  She is present with her family.  When she is talking to her children (you know how we sometimes say "Mmmhmm..." as they chatter and we keep working right along), she squats down to their level, looks in their eyes, and LISTENS. With her friends...she will go out of her way to ask about you and pray with you...I've cried just seeing her coming over to ask how I am (on a rough morning).  She is also unafraid to say when she has lost that presence with her family, and she will take a Facebook break to refocus on them. She also stands in the presence of God to get her focus and energy to do all that is on her plate.  She inspires me to live in the present with my family, my friends, and my God.  Thank you Liz!” –Tanya Reed

“Optimistic! She is always coming up with cool ideas and she looks at the amazing things in life and is very thankful for what she has and who God has made her to be. She is very creative and loving. She inspires me with how she takes good care of her kids, she is compassionate and she inspires me to be a kinder person.” –Brook Ostrander

It was a true blessing to spend the morning with you and your wonderful family. What you are doing with your children is amazing and I can see how it is the perfect fit for your family. You have such an amazing soul, and I am thankful to call you friend! Thank you for letting me be a part of your day, you are a true inspiration!

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take" https://sweetpeasphotos.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/2/-life-is-not-measured-by-the-number-of-breaths-you-take {Fifty-Two Weeks}

{Week Five of Fifty-Two}

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take but the moments that take our breath away. Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass; it's learning to dance in the rain.”

What does being a leader mean to you? Well this week’s woman is way more than just a leader. She is educated, smart and sassy, full of spectacular ideas, and has a heart of gold. She has made a huge impact in not only my life and my children’s lives but thousands of other children. Week five of fifty-two goes out to Tanya Seeds, Principle at Douglas Primary School!

Tanya has been the Primary Schools Principal since 2011. She wasn’t always a Principal. She went to school to be an Athletic Trainer and has a Bachelor of Science in Wellness Management with an emphasis in Athletic Training from BHSU.  She also has a teaching certification in secondary science from Montana State University, a Masters of Science in Instruction and Curriculum, and a Masters of Science in School Administration from Grand Canyon State University.  Her husband was offered a job in a small town in northern S.D. for football and they also needed a science teacher so that is where she started teaching. Tanya said “I love Science and loved the job”.  In 2005 they moved to Douglas were she taught chemistry and biology until 2010 at our local high school. “I worked with Dick Wortham and his passion for learning and for his students has always stuck with me.” Tanya says. “I also was the Instructional Facilitator in 2010 right before I became the Douglas Primary School Principal.”

“Being the Principal means so much more than being a leader. It is insuring at this age we are laying a true foundation to have the passion for learning. Somewhere along the way children/students have learned to hate school. We have to figure out how to foster the love of learning, as we only have a small window with them here.” Tanya says. “Believing in everybody and putting people in positions that will benefit our students is a must. In this job you have to listen a lot, bring solutions, and sometimes take it to the next level.” She says. I had seen this quote right before I did Tanya’s interview and story and saved it just for her week on the blog. “Great leaders don’t set out to be a leader; they set out to make a difference. It’s never about the role, always about the goal.” It fits perfect and I know after talking with several of her teachers they would agree!

When I first met Tanya I was enrolling our girls into Kindergarten back in 2013. Letting your children go into the world and not knowing what to expect, as a mother it can be super emotional. The first day of school I cried as I walked back to my car with my husband. I remember thinking “how can I let someone else take care of them all day who I don’t really even know?” It is truly a scary thing for a stay at home mom who rarely left my girls with anyone for long periods of time. But with each day, and the excitement of school and the love of learning my girls made it easier for me. One of the first people to greet the kids was always Mrs. Seeds, with that amazing smile and calmness about her; it made dropping them off easier also. There are 7 Kindergarten teachers, 8 First Grade teachers, 5 Specials teachers (art, library, music, computers, and gym), 7 Special Education teachers, 15 Para’s and the office staff for the 2015 to 2016 school year. When the Primary School had 2 Grade in their building they use to have close to 470 children in the school. Now they have close to 290 children in the school each day. “Teachers who love teaching, teach children to love learning.” The teachers and staff at DPS are all amazing. My experience at the primary school was always wonderful and I have made so many great friends, one being Tanya.

I asked Tanya what her favorite things to do for her students were, “CELEBRATE!” she says.  I believe this is one thing many of our schools lack and the Primary school does an amazing job celebrating their students and their accomplishments. “It is ok to be proud of ourselves. We should celebrate learning and the achievements we have made. It helps build relationships and brings the love of learning and the excitement of school to life.” Tanya says. Every morning all the students and staff gather in the gym for the “Pledge of Allegiance” then they dance, sing, and start their morning off with giggle and smiles. The energy in the gym is amazing!

The students and staff mean so much to Tanya. You can feel that, see it, and experience it anytime you are around her or in the school. “My staff has a willingness to try new and different things, how they teach, and how they look at the children. They are the ones who put it in place, and they are truly the soldiers. They do what is best for each child. ” Tanya says.  As you know all jobs are hard and somedays are harder then others but you would never know that when you walk into the school. The professionalism in the school is top notch. As a parent we know our children better than anyone so when we have a question or concern the school is always there to help. Call, email, come in they will always give you their time. Parent involvement is so important not only for the child but also for the school. When you help or volunteer at the school you get a better understanding of what is going on, what you can do to help your own child, and what the teacher may need from the parent. DPS loves parent volunteers and have a PAC (Parent Advisory Committee) who meets twice a month. They do most of the schools fundraisers to raise money for things like playground equipment or things the teacher may need for classrooms.

Getting to know Tanya…..

What are your biggest struggles….I struggle with control, what happens to all the children when their out of the building. I am a mother first, and the children at the school are my children to. Wanting the best for them in all of their environments, school or home.

What is your greatest accomplishment….Having a family, 3 amazing kids, and a wonderful husband. Being a Family, and doing everything together.

What is your biggest fear….My children graduating and leaving to college. Or a child slips through the cracks.

What is one thing on your bucket list….Parachuting!

What is your favorite quote….“Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take but the moments that take our breath away and Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's learning to dance in the rain.”

One word to describe “Tanya” and why she inspires you…..

“Passionate!  In addition to being a fellow Mom to one of my son's friends, classmates and teammates, Tanya has been the DPS Principal for both of my boys.  She demonstrates passion day in and day out.  Passion for her job and responsibilities, her staff and of course the students.  If you have ever been to a VIB assembly you can just feel her passion and love for those kids!  We are so thankful to have someone like Tanya to watch over our children.” –Jenn Rinn

“Tough (in a good way), she is always pushing us to be better! She somehow has this demanding job and yet finds time to be mom, coach, and volunteer. She also has this amazingly creative mind and seems to always think outside the box! She sometimes has to push, drag, and kick us out of that box but we get there. The amazing staff she oversees and high student achievement at DPS speaks volumes about her ability to lead!” –Rebecca Moser

“Inspirational, caring, motivated! Tanya is a leader. She is always challenging and inspiring her staff and students to reach their full potential. Tanya holds a high standard for her staff and a bit of her competitive nature comes out when she says she wants our school to be the best.  She always asks, “Is that what is best for students?” with each decision that is made. Tanya puts unmeasurable time and energy into making sure our students succeed and have a fun and positive experience in their first two years of school.  Her door is always open to staff and students. While accomplishing all this, Tanya manages to be an amazing mother and wife.” –Sonja Tennyson

“Caring!” –Brian Bulgrin

“Quick-witted, intelligent, goal oriented!” An Amazing woman, who puts family first. She looks out for everyone before herself and never expects anything in return. Is an inspiration for anyone that's hard-working, goal oriented, and wants to achieve greatness.” –Jack Seeds (husband)

I don't know how she juggles it all! She is a true inspiration to all!” –Chyann Brandemuehl

"Doer! Anything that comes her way she is willing to do.” –Kim Schwartzkopf

“Supportive! Tanya is an inspiration to not only the staff but the students. She has made it a priority to make sure we are doing what is best for ALL students and finds way to get the students excited about school. It is nice to have an administrator who is supportive of you and your family! Tanya knows the importance of family and is always willing to do what is best for our DPS family as well as allow us to do what is best for our own families!” –Kylea Scott

“Inspiring! Her leadership and enthusiasm inspire us to work tirelessly to always do what is best for our kids and to continue to grow in doing so.” –Tim Painter

“Super Funny! She makes me laugh and makes jokes.” –Madison Renstrom (2nd Grader)

“Driven! Tanya is an amazing woman who is driven to excel at what she does.  She takes all her jobs (mother, principal and more) seriously and expects that best of herself and others around her.  Her perspective as a principal has always been forward thinking.  I will attend trainings and learn about the "new up and coming" strategies in school, and say, "yep, we've been doing this for a few years!"  She understands the balance of being a mom and working full time and reflects that back to us staff members.  Under her leadership, I have continued to learn what it takes to be the best at my job.  She is an invaluable asset to our community!!  And, she's got a great sense of humor!!” –Becky Soske

“Present! Tanya is wonderful to work with she is a very likable, supportive and approachable lady. She has high expectations of those around her and pushes us to elevate our level of performance and commitment to our jobs as well holding herself to those same principals. She has a family and is still very involved in their lives while balancing her responsibilities at our school. She always comes to work with a positive attitude and tries to start our students days off with as much positive as she can. She tries to always have what is best for our students and staff close to her heart when making decisions. I enjoy her visibility in our school as well. She doesn't just sit in her office and give directives, she is in our classrooms, in our meetings, in our hallways and I very much appreciate that quality in her leadership. It's very reassuring to know that your principal is interested in what you are doing in your classroom. If problems arise, she encourages us to look at all possibilities when deciding on how best to handle situations and helps where and when she can. I enjoy my job very much and I thoroughly enjoy working with Tanya. Tanya, thanks for making my dream job something I look forward to coming to everyday, you inspire me and make me feel like a valued, important part of a great team.” –Jen Barker

After that hour I knew I would be extremely happy calling her my boss and working at Douglas Primary School. She cares about you on more than just a professional level. She cares about your growth as a teacher, your family, and as a friend. I love my job and this community for many different reasons and from that very first meeting; she is the one reason that has never changed. When family and friends ask how my job is, I always tell them I work for the best boss around and she was the reason I decided to take this job in the first place. Thank you Tanya for believing I could do this! I love being a part of this building and feel very blessed that I ended up at DPS.” –Nikki Tresch

Thank you for letting me be a part of your day, you are a true inspiration!

"The first to forgive is the strongest." https://sweetpeasphotos.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/1/-the-first-to-forgive-is-the-strongest {Fifty-Two Weeks}

{Week Four of Fifty-Two}

“The first to apologize is the bravest, the first to forgive is the strongest, and the first to forget is the happiest.”

This lady has an infectious smile, her laugh is joyful, her inner beauty is breathtaking, and is very passionate about her job. You may know her whether it being a longtime friend, client, classmate, or the lady with the gorgeous hair. I have spent many hours with this woman and always have walked away with a better attitude and outlook on life. She is truly amazing at what she does and her clients love her. Week four of fifty-two goes to Ashley Hinckley, the rock star of hair style!

Ashley went to college in Rapid City, the Black Hills Beauty College and graduated in 2006. She says “I went into this profession because I enjoy making people feel good about themselves. I love the fast pace and that you go to your job everyday with something new, never the same in and out day after day.” Ashley has owned Studio A Salon and Spa since October of 2013. “My husband and I came up with the name. It just clicked and stuck so that’s how Studio A came to be.” Ashley said. I asked what a stylist/boss means to her. Why are her customers and clients so important to her business? “Being a stylist isn’t just my job, it’s my livelihood. It is a big part of who I am! I come to my work not feeling like it’s a job! I love my job, I love coming to work, and I love my clients! Getting to know my customers/clients is #1! When I know what they like, who they are as a person, and how they feel about their self I can better serve them. That is what I love most.” She says.

Here is a quote I found that fit perfect….

“I love being a hairdresser because no other career on earth allows me to connect with a stranger in such a physical and emotional way that we both walk away changed for life. Every client I have has changed my life in one way or another; I only hope that I have done the same.”

Now if you have ever had your hair done? You know when you go to your stylist/hair dresser you have to have a lot of trust in them. Whether it is just a cut to a color they will change what you see in the mirror. Even the smallest changes can be a big thing to some women. Now for myself I am good with pretty much anything and will go from really long hair to really short. I may even go dark to light and am excited to see it every time. But I have that trust in Ashley to do what will look good and know she will make it fabulous. I also know those who have long hair and would never cut it off in fear of what it will look like. This is why I love Ashley, because when I walk in and say “well I need something new” she does it!  She may laugh at me or even give me that look of “are you sure” which is not unusual. But I have always walked away feeling like a new person!

Hair dressers are also the best of friends and probably know more about your personal life then your own family. I know that I can have a bad day, walk into the salon and when I leave it has totally been turned around. I love the salon for that very reason. Someone once told me that going to a hairdresser is better than going to a therapist. You get to talk about things bothering you, get stuff off your chest, and get beautiful doing it. Win win all around. The girls here are fabulous, funny, sassy, and have the kindest hearts. I am truly thankful for this salon and all these women.

These days you can go on the internet or even pinterest and find cool new styles and looks for your next hair do. Most may work for you and look amazing but some are just well let’s say “out there”. I know a few girls who can pull those looks off but I know I cannot have pink hair and go home without getting a little grief from my husband. I asked Ashley what her favorite style was to do and she says “Depends on the person. I like to do things that are new, but also like a fun color.” There are so many things they can do these days. At Studio A they offer a full service salon from cuts, colors, perms, waxing, massage, nails, pedicures and so much more. She has 5 women working in the salon plus herself, Cameo, Tina, Tish, Erin and Lindsey. Some are rented booths and some are employees. They all bring something to the table and all work very well together. The energy in the salon is always uplifting and fun. I would have to say one of the best in town, but Douglas has many great stylists in town to choose from. Ashley is a true inspiration for me as she has a business and a family and juggles them both very well!

Getting to know Ashley…..

What do you love most about your job….The flexibility and all the people I meet the many clients who have turned into friends.

What is your biggest struggle….Not being in a million places at once. From being wife, mother of three amazing boys, work, home, friends, family, and everything else I’d love to do.  Managing it all and managing it well.

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in your career….NEVER give up!

What is your greatest fear….Failing my children.

What is the greatest accomplishment….Being a mother and having a family.

What is your favorite quote….The first to apologize is the bravest, the first to forgive is the strongest, and the first to forget is the happiest. (She also LOVES all Dr. Seuss quotes!)

What is something on your bucket list….Taking my family, my boys to Disney World!

One word to describe “Ashley” and why she inspires you…..

“Vibrant! She is an inspiration to many women. She has her own salon, beautiful family, she’s beautiful inside and out and is kind hearted!” –Kaylann Blackburn

“Spunky!! Spicy!! Caring!!” –Tanya Seeds

“Spontaneous! She has always kept me on my toes and keeps me guessing!” –Ryan Hinckley (husband)

“Incredible! She is an inspiration because she's absolutely incredible at everything she does. She's a devoted mother, the greatest wife, most amazing friend/person you could have in yours or your family’s lives! She owns her business and puts her all into it and does a flawless job at juggling all aspects of her life! She is extremely loyal, she always comes thru in a pinch no questions asked! She's defiantly one of a kind, and I'm blessed to know her and have her in my life.” –Ashley Murphy

"Genuine! There are so many words that I could use to describe Ashley! She's an amazing person! She's always there for people and she's not just doing it because it's a nice gesture, she genuinely cares about people. She's a very loyal friend with a heart of gold.” –Erin Salway

“Admirable! She is an inspiration to me because she can put a smile on even when things aren't going the best. She would give people the shirt off her back and help anyone that is in need. She has always been there for me and my family and has opened her home to us as family! She is a lovely person on the inside and out! Thank you!” –Cami Mann

“Amazing! She took a business that had a rotten personality and made it into a comfortable homey business! She has never led me but has listened to my idea and then told me honestly whether it would be a good choice!” –Beth Wittrock

"Selfless!  I don't know how she does what she does, truly I don't. She is a fantastic mother (with all boys and a set of twins--seriously how does she do it? How do you do twins!!), wife, friend, hairdresser, and owns a business!  Phew--makes me tired just thinking of it all!  I'm sure that poor girl has zero time to herself and a list a mile long but, she still goes out of her way to find time to make people feel deserved and loved.” –Marissa Beard

“Driven! She balances work, the boys, husband, family and friends and she is always doing.” –Tish Swanson

“FABULOUS! She is the one person that takes the time  to work on my hair...she doesn't get frustrated or irritated with it...she just takes her time and does her job and she does it very well! Every time I go in to get my hair done she asks me if I am ready to get the BEAST tamed lol. Ashley is not only my hairstylist but she is also one of my very closest friends...I actually call her sister.” –Mandy Steward

“I don't have just one word that can describe her! She has the biggest heart and loves big! And shops big!  She is someone that would do anything for those she loves. She maybe wouldn't give you the shirt off her back, but she would definitely buy you one! No, but seriously if you needed her in the middle of the night, in a blizzard, she would be there...no questions asked. She is also a woman of her word. If she tells you she is going to do something...she does it. She is one of my dearest friends and has been there for me through every struggle and every achievement I have had since I have known her! She is a very amazing blessing in my life!”-Cameo Cox

“Generous. She always has time for everyone and rarely puts herself before others. Not only is she a wonderful business woman, she is a wonderful sister in law that has helped us through tough times.  Ashley never lets anything stand in her way when it comes to something she wants. (Her business especially)” -Shea Morgan

Thank you for being such an inspiration, for being the bright star in a dark world, and for being you! It was so much fun to watch you work and be a part of your mid-morning, thank you again for letting me capture you for my project, it means the world to me!

“Why fit in when you’re born to stand out!” https://sweetpeasphotos.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/1/-why-fit-in-when-you-re-born-to-stand-out “Fifty-Two Weeks of Inspiration”

{Week Three of Fifty-Two Weeks}

“Why fit in when you’re born to stand out!”

This week I got to spend some time with this amazing lady. You may know this fabulous women whether she is your friend, co-worker, or she may even be the nurse that helped deliver that new bundle of joy. She is amazing at what she does. Now I have known this lady for some time now and what I have learned from her is she will give whatever she sets her mind to 100%. From being a single mother to a special little girl, to going to school for not one degree but two, going to work and loves her job, to being someone you can count on if you need any help at all. My third weeks challenge is with Dani Geer, an OB nurse for Memorial Hospital of Converse County (MHCC).

Now some of you may know her, but some of you may not know this wasn’t her first career choice. Dani went to college her first go around to become a wildlife biologist. Crazy ha! I didn’t even know this. She went to school for 5 years to become a wildlife biologist and worked in Pinedale as a biologist for 3 years. She says “It sounds odd but it was very hard to find a full time job in wildlife. So the next best thing is helping people and well the pay is way better, emotionally and financially. After I had Kiele I knew labor and delivery is where I wanted to be”. She then decided to turn to healthcare and started going to nursing school while being a single mother. “I enjoy taking care of people. There is something so rewarding about being a nurse.” Dani says. Dani amazes me, she always has. Being a mother is hard; being a single mother without the help from their father is even harder! Dani did it on her own with a lot of dedication, hard work, tears some sad and some happy, and help from friends. She was in nursing school for 2 years and during that time Kim Crumly her close friend and Dani went to clinical opposite of each other so Kim could help with Kiele. Dani has been working for the MHCC for five and a half years. Five of which have been in labor and delivery. They work 12 hour shifts, but can be longer if they are slammed. She is very dedicated to her job and to her daughter. But this coming June she will be adding to her family, no babies yet anyways but she is getting married to Brian and adding two daughters! I am so excited for them! She has found her soul mate and he has accepted her daughter as his own. Now that is something to be excited about!!!!

Now if you have had a baby here in Douglas, or even had to be taken care of at our local hospital you will find the nurses here are all amazing. I know from my experiences, the nurses here go above and beyond. I have never walked away feeling I wasn’t taken care of.

Here is a quote I found that holds true for those who dedicate their lives to the medical field. “When a person decides to become a nurse, they make the most important decision of their lives. They choose to dedicate themselves to the care of others”.

Nurses are usually the first person you see when you walk through any of the doors here at MHCC. They are with you before you see any Dr. to get all your information, vitals, and examine you to give the Dr. the best information prior to your visit/surgery. I asked Dani what she would describe being a nurse means to her “compassion, dedication, so much emotion, having highs and lows but being able to hide those lows, dealing with patients and being your best. There is so much that goes into this job, some you will see, but most is behind closed doors.” MHCC delivered 177 babies in 2015, which is a lot of babies! Dani said she couldn't count the numbers of babies she has helped deliver, but says A LOT! If you have ever had a baby you know the nurse is in your room more than the doctor and I am not saying that as a bad thing. But sometimes the nurse has to deliver a baby, and Dani says she had one of those babies. “The Dr. had stepped out and to our surprise it was time and in that moment you are there.” She has also been a part of 5 deliveries with twins.

We had some visitors come see us just for this project as there were no babies in the nursery on the day I did the interview. Would have loved to see her in real action, but these two sweet twins came to visit and help us get Dani in action! They were not born in Douglas but their mom, Manda Keeler had also been an OB nurse for the hospital after nursing school. So we asked her to bring her brand new babies to see us. Amelia James and Katie Mary Smylie were born January 8, 2016 at PSL in Denver Colorado. The nurses here in the labor and delivery were happy Manda went to Denver to have her babies. “This way she had the experience she wanted, and with the twins it was just the best decision for her and her family. We are truly happy for her!” says Beckie Oliver, RN and manager of the labor and delivery. As we stood in the hospitals nursery 3 out of the 5 of us had twins, Becky Oliver, I, and Manda Smylie. Now that is pretty cool!

Katie, Dani, and Amelia

One word to describe “Dani” and why she inspires you…..

"Real"!  Dani is a hard working dedicated OB nurse.  She not only dedicated to her patients, but her peers and to me. She's a single mother who put herself through college and received 2 degrees!  She never uses excuses for anything.  She just makes it work.  She volunteers frequently for extra shifts to make sure our schedule is covered.  Safe, quality patient care is very important to her and she is not afraid to advocate for her patients.  She strives for excellence in every aspect of nursing and patient care.” –Beckie Oliver (also pictured above with Dani)

“Compassionate! Dani was a very giving and caring person through my pregnancies but especially my twins! She never let my worry consume me, always reassured me, and knew what was best for me! I will never be able to put into words what her support meant to me during that time! She is an outstanding nurse and beautiful person!” –Ashley Hinckley

“Amazing! My mom inspires me so much because she loves me so much! My mom is the best mommy she could ever have and am so glad that she was chosen to be her mommy.” –Daughter Kiele

“Compassionate! She helped deliver both my girls...both emergency C-sections last minute. I remember with Carsyn I was so glad to see her face walk through that door! She is an amazingly talented nurse and we were lucky to have her twice!” –Rebecca Moser

“Amazing! She's the kindest hearted, selfless person I've ever met. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body and always makes sure the family is taken care of ahead of her own needs. An amazing mother!”    -Brian Harmeyer (fiancé)

It so hard to describe just one word ...I have an entire list, she's absolutely amazing and inspiring in everything that she does....but if I have to narrow it down I would describe her as DETERMIND!! She is so inspiring in the life she has created for her and Kiele! She has become successful in both her professional and personal life! She is an absolute true blessing! She is my inspiration....she wants the best thing for all of her patients and I believe that she makes a difference in every one of their lives!  She is well loved by everyone that she has cared for and absolutely loves doing what she does! I am truly blessed to call her my friend and colleague!!! –Kim Crumly

“Compassionate!” –Kurt Engle

“True! Dani is a true person. She loves what she has in her life, both family and career. The last few years I have become closer with this beautiful “True” woman.” –Beth Pirnie

“Fighter! She has inspired me to get past my fears in order to move forward with my nursing career. She did it all on her own with a tiny baby along for the ride. It wasn't easy for her, I saw how she persevered and now she's thriving not only as a nurse but as a mom and a soon to be wife. She has fought for everything she has and that's why I'm proud to call her friend.” –Shannon Brown

Thank you for letting me question you, follow you around while you were hard at work, and to be able to capture your true love for your job. You are my inspiration!

{Week Two of Fifty-Two Weeks}

“You are only as limited as your own mind set”

This last week I got to spend some time with this amazing lady. She is not only an inspiration to myself, but to so many who are in need. She has a true calling for what she does! Her faith in the Lord is extraordinary. The power of prayer and her unchanging devotion to help those in need is one of the many reasons she is such a blessing to our community. My second weeks challenge is with Sheila Harr the faithful, caring, strong women, and such a true blessing of King’s Portion.

What is King’s Portion you ask? King’s portion is a Nonprofit 501(C)(3) organization dedicated  to provide food for the community who may be struggling, the elderly, sick, single families, or those who can’t make it on their income. They collect and distribute food such as meat, canned goods, bread and other food items to those in need within the community. All items are given away at no cost. They serve everyone that is in need of assistance without discrimination. “No one will be turned away!” Sheila says.

I asked Shelia how she got started and why it is important for the community to know how important this pantry is to her. “I am a Christian! I do what I do because it is what God has called me to do. No degree, no diploma just a call, and I stepped into it in obedience. One day in prayer I asked God, “what is my calling? God you have a calling for every person. As a little girl I remember watching the TV show specials about “Feed the Children” and to watch the suffering of hungry children in Africa broke my heart” She said. As I sat next to her, my heart just breaks. We all have seen the shows, the commercials, or a documentary on the hungry children. I know I see a commercial once a day and my children too have said “I want them to have what I have”.  Sheila goes on to say “I would cry, so desiring to help in any way. But as a small child myself, I couldn’t do anything. I asked my mother if we could help, she kindly said “yes! We could sponsor a child or even 2”. So as a family we did. I remember feeling a sense of “it’s all ok now” since we were helping a suffering child” as she is holding back her tears. “Just one! If I can reach just one and not leave anyone behind” she says. She was guided by God and her many prayers to do what she was called to, helping those in need. That is how King’s Portion came to be. They have now been open 5 years and counting. Her goals for the pantry are to spread out and reach the homeless, the broken and lost, and serve hot meals to those in need. Her ideas and goals are endless as there are so many in our community who would benefit from them. King’s Portion has also taken on another amazing program called “Blessings in a Backpack”. This program has been brought to help serve our children/students in the Douglas Community Schools. Blessings in a Backpack/Bag started with just two schools in 2005 and now serve 66,000 students in 642 schools spread throughout 45 states.  There will be more about this amazing program soon :)

Sheila is a very compassionate person, very strong women who reaches so many broken and hurting!! People often don’t realize how hard it can be for some people to make it, even in a small town! We tend to believe there is no poor, homeless, and struggling amounts us. But there is! She is the heart of King’s Portion, but so are all the many volunteers that help make it successful. From packing bags, to helping them to their car with their groceries, to logging numbers in the computer, to a private prayer they are all there to help in their own way. Where does the food come from you ask? The majority of their food comes from donations. Those donations come from individuals and local businesses within the community. If you never been in the pantry I would urge you to go, even if it is to see it in person. It’s a very powerful thing/place to walk into. I remember the first time I went, I was blown away with amount of energy that I felt just walking in the door. Very powerful! The shelves are stocked from floor to ceiling with canned goods and other items.

As I walked around this evening watching and listening to those Sheila was helping, to a group of women in the back room praying. I found myself thankful! I am very fortunate to have what I have. To be able to eat a warm meal whenever I want, or even go out to dinner. To my amazing husband who does everything he can to make things possible and works so hard for everything we have. I am humbled and truly feel blessed to be in the company of these volunteer’s, these shepherds of our community.  What Sheila has done here is truly inspirational. What she and her husband do for this community is beyond amazing! I love this quote from Mother Teresa “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by "I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.”

Getting to know Sheila……

What’s your favorite bible verse…..Two actually! "If it is in the power of your hands to help someone, do it now and not wait ‘til later” from the book of Proverbs. And “If you are faithful over little things he will make you faithful over much”.

Her office is purple along with a wall in the pantry, her favorite color. Books, she has many but most of them are scripture books, spiritual books, and bibles on the shelves along the wall. You feel almost like being at home while in her office.

What has been the most rewarding…..The customers who have given back. The hugs they share with me, the flowers of thankful hearts, the many cards and the words of “Thank you, Because of you, and Love”. Gods favor over the ministry, increased space and new building, money and to be able to serve.

What is something you may have on your bucket list…..Africa/India to serve among the orphanage and lepers.

What is you biggest fear…..Biggest fear would have to be flying! Also one forgotten person and haven’t been able to reach everyone who may be in need.

Who inspires you? And why…..My husband! He is the most patient man, most gentle, his values, a Godly man, and whose wisdom is cherished.

Who is your biggest cheerleader…..Becky Soske is my biggest cheerleader! She is very confidant, strong, compassionate women who offers much wisdom. She is my most treasured friend!

What is your favorite quote…..”You are only as limited as your own mind set”

One word describes “Shelia” and why she inspires you…..

“SPARK, she kindles the flame in others to give and care.” - Felicia Smith

“Warrior! Sheila is a prayer warrior for this community. She has a heart as big as the sky. Everything she does, she does for the glory of God & this community benefits greatly from it. The food pantry & blessings in a backpack are defiantly a blessing to so many!” -Bridget Stinson

“Overcomer!  Sheila has faced many obstacles in her life, and has found her way to use her own challenges from her past to be a blessing to others today.  She is a friend to all, and a stranger to no one.  She loves people with the Lord's love and reaches the lost, hurting and broken in a way that is real and tangible.  She is a precious blessing to this community!!” –Becky Soske

“DRIVEN! She is driven by her love of God and her desire to have a deeper relationship with Him. She is driven by her love and compassion for the lost, the poor and broken hearted!” –Jeff Harr (husband)

“I have been asked to describe Mrs. Sheila Harr in one word.  ONE WORD!!  How do you describe a lady who is of grace, integrity, who is Godly, a helper, a shepherd, a giver, is wise, hospitable, and is always helping.  She is a woman who has taken a thought and turned it into an amazing ministry for her community. Her knowledge is inspirational and leads people to God and His truth.  She is a prayer warrior unlike any I've met and leads and encourages others to do the same.  Her vision has helped feed the masses and given nourishment and warmth to those who are in need and those who may just need a pick me up.  She is one of the most selfless individuals you will ever meet.  She has helped create a way to feed our children in a way that the child stays prideful. I could go on and on, so to ask for one word to describe Mrs. Sheila has been a challenge.  I've looked through dictionaries, thesaurus, and thought and thought and thought.  What is a word that means all of this?  Maybe the word ECLECTIC?  Even that doesn't touch the true sense of Sheila Harr.” –Sandra Toolen

“Graceful!  Sheila has been such an inspiration for me, and so many others, because of her compassionate loving heart! She cares so much about everyone she meets and wants to share Gods love with them.  She always has a huge smile on her face and can light up any room with her presence! Our town is so blessed to have such an amazing woman!!” –Nichole Sullivan

“Joyful! She lives her faith. Always there for prayer and encouragement, life with Jesus is full of joy and Sheila wears His joy beautifully and shares it with all. I am Truly blessed to have her in my life.” –Becky Reynolds

"Only as happy as you let yourself be." https://sweetpeasphotos.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/1/-only-as-happy-as-you-let-yourself-be {Week One of Fifty-Two Weeks}

I started this project not only for myself creatively, but for the women in our community! These next 52 weeks you will meet women that are an inspiration to our community, who go above and beyond for their families or our small town, who may own their own business, or are just an inspiration to those who love them. {Week One}

“Only as happy as you let yourself be”

You may know this woman, whether she is family or a friend, a co-worker, someone who may have saved your life, or helped your child at school, she is beyond amazing! She wears many hats, from the wife and mother, to a firefighter or EMT, she is a rock star. I am amazed that she can juggle all these things and do them all very well. We all know we have our off days and that is true of this fine lady, but it doesn’t take her down. She gets back up and does it even better the next time. My first week challenge is with Sherry Evans, A bad a** (sorry about the language)!

Who happens to be a volunteer firefighter and EMT for our fine community the past five and half years. Our station covers over 3200 square miles of city and county. I asked her what made her want to go into this profession and she said “I kind of fell into it. There was a need in our community, so my husband and I decided to try it. That’s when I fell in Love with it and my husband and I have been here ever since.” Sherry has taken the fire 1 and fire 2 state tests, and also is an instructor and teaches around our state. One of the only women in Douglas to do so, isn’t that awesome?  She is now going to school to further her education in fire science and has 4 more classes to go to get her degree. She has logged more than 600 training hours, which by the way are unpaid. Like any profession education is very important, and with the new methods and tools used in today’s jobs it is a must. Sherry says “I want to be prepared for everything. I want to be educated and do the best I can for every call that comes in.”

Being fit also comes into play when you are a first responder, and Sherry is one of the fittest women I know. She is consistently in the gym at the station to get that work out in. “Line of duty heart deaths are a huge reason I keep myself fit. I want to be active, fit, and be able to do the job big or small. One way to insure I can is the hard work it takes to be fit.” Sherry says.

I asked her if she has ever had an issue with being a woman in this profession and she said “some, not many. I think your going to have it anywhere you go man or women. But it just pushes me to be even better and to prove them wrong.” I can’t even image. I come from a family of firemen and back then it wasn’t known to have any women in the field. Now, now it is more common and I think if you can do the job as well as anyone else, why shouldn’t you go for it. I would love to see this amazing woman at work and in action. She is a true inspiration!!!!

Getting to know Sherry…….

Who is your inspiration….My older sister! She is one of the selfless people you will ever meet. She is the mother of two boys that have muscular dystrophy. One of which has passed and the other son is fighting the battle every day. She still has a smile on her face, a true love for The Lord, and keeps going everyday with no complaints.

What is your biggest challenge either here at work, at school, or in life in general….Managing it all!

What is your biggest fear….Failure

What is her greatest accomplishment….Her 4 children! They are amazing, good kids.

What is something on your bucket list….Doing a body building/figure competition.

What is your favorite quote...."Only as happy as you let yourself be."

One word describe “Sherry” and why she inspires you…..

“Extraordinary - she can work with young children, save lives, be a mom, fight fire, be a beast (have you seen her workout), and be kind and gentle!  She has made a difference in so many lives and I am honored to call her a friend!”-Tanya Seeds

"Strong! She is a beast! I love Sherry she is an amazing firefighter and EMS worker!! She really is an inspiration....STRONG is my word for sure!!"

-Rebecca Moser

"Awesome" and "Saves people" -The Renstrom Twins :)

"Driven" -Jay Nidiffer

"Determined, she never gives up 100% all the way" -Missie McLagan

"Tenacious. She is an overcomer. She has never backed down from a challenge in life. She is very intelligent, cares greatly about her impact on the world, and lives in such a way to show that the world is a better place because of her contributions! There is nothing she won't try, and when she takes on a task, she will do so with passion and excellence...." -Becky Soske

"Super!  She's an inspiration to all women.  There are few women on the Fire Dept. anyways and truly she's the only one I would trust to pull me from a burning building. She gives her all in everything she does.  She manages family, work and her hobbies (firefighting and working out) better than anyone I know.  She's an amazing friend.  I'm a person of few words when it comes to sharing my life I’ve always felt I can trust and confide in Sherry.  She's real and authentic.  One of a kind!  I absolutely adore her." -Tiffany Tschida

Thank you to this fine woman for all she does for our community!

Thank you for letting me questions you, follow you around your work place, and capture your true love for your job. You are my inspiration!
