{Fifty-Two Weeks}

I started this project not only for myself creatively, but for the women in our community! These next 52 weeks you will meet women that are an inspiration to our community, who go above and beyond for their families or our small town, who may own their own business, or are just an inspiration to those who love them. Each woman has their own story, their own calling, their own struggles, and their own accomplishments. I couldn’t have said it better “I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say because of you I didn’t give up.”-unknown

{Week Ten of Fifty-Two}

“It is what it is.”

I first met this wonderful woman when joining the primary school PAC (parent advisory community) three years ago. I knew of her but hadn’t met her in person. She is one of those women who you can talk to for hours and still feel like there is more to say. She is a smiling face, a warm welcome, and above all an amazing lady who puts her patients and family first. Week ten of fifty-two goes out to the amazing Doctor with a heart of gold who loves her patients, Dr. Dee Engle of Memorial Hospital of Converse County.

If you have been a patient of hers or still are a patient you know how much work and love she puts into every patient. Dee grew up north of Lusk on the family ranch. She went to school for a total of 9 years and then on top of that 3 years of residency. She has her bachelors in science from the University of Wyoming, got her medical degree in family medicine and obstetrics from The University Washington, and did her residency in Rapid City. I knew it took a lot to become a doctor but wow. I asked her what made her want to become a Dr. and Dee said “I was always interested in science and community work. I knew in middle school I wanted to do something in family medicine. I love being around people. I thought I would be a nurse but then decided I wanted to be in charge and have my own patients. Being in family medicine you get to learn the family’s dynamics and watch the families grow in each stage of their lives.” Dr. Engle is a family medicine with obstetrics doctor at MHCC and has been here for eight and a half years.

I admire this woman for so many reasons but one is she holds it all together so well, even when she may not think she is. I asked her how hard it is with her job and raising a family. I know just being a stay at home mom like me is hard I can’t imagine having a full time job on top of a family. “Balance is hard! This is my biggest challenge. A patient may come in when I may or may not be on call and when I have to tell my family it will take a while it is hard for me. I would love to be in both places at once and sometimes my family has to be second. Thankfully my family is very understanding and I don’t have to do this very often.” Dee says. Like most doctors and nurses, she works at her clinic but also one week night a week and one weekend a month. She also is the chief of staff, has board meetings and finds time to volunteer at her girls schools on top of her already busy schedule.

Making a difference in people life is something Dee does and you can see that with every patient she takes care of. I asked her what she loved most about her job and she said “Making a difference in people’s lives. I love being a part of such an important family experience, from the birth of a child, to taking care of the family year after year.” As we talked about family, work and life I wanted to know what she would want her patients to leave her office feeling like. “That I listen, that I care, and I am here for them big or small. My patients are very important to me. They are all unique, very respectful, and are open to other ideas and thoughts about an approach I may want to try. I truly love my job and the people I get to treat and care for.” Dee says.

Now I know the hard worker and amazing women Dee is, just from the 3 years I have known her. But something I didn’t know and her patients may not know is she worked for the Lusk Harold in the summers as a kid. She did this for almost 4 summers. She did the article “What’s the scoop”, interviewing, wrote the stories, took pictures, laid it all out and then it was printed in the Torrington paper. Who knew right! She says she loved it and it was a great summer job.

 Getting to know Dee….

What is your biggest struggle….Balance but the hardest thing is delivering bad news to a patient.

What is your greatest accomplishment….Trying to keep all my balls in the air, family, patients, keeping everything running smoothly.

What is your biggest fear….I won’t be able to give my family or patients what they need. Not being able to deliver on a promise or cause emotional hurt.

What is something on your bucket list….Traveling the world! Would love to see Australia.

Who inspires you and why….Florence Nightingale as she was compassionate, my patients inspire me and my parents for their hard work ethics.

What is your favorite quote….”It is what it is.”

One word to describe “Dee” and why she inspires you…..

“Selfless! She would do anything for her "momma's”! –Kelsey Nelson

"Sweet! She makes time to volunteer for our school & community even though she is a very busy doctor. She has a heart of gold & I love her smile & laugh.” –Bridget Stinson

“Hard worker! Great Mother!” –Tanya Seeds

“Thoughtful. Dee is an amazing lady. She is so busy yet she still finds time to volunteer in Maddie's classroom and make special treats for the students! Her thoughtfulness and generosity is inspiring!” –Cathy Dugger

“There are so many words to describe Dr. Engle. The one that I would pick today is compassionate. She is a very busy lady, being a loving wife, amazing mother whom runs her kids around to activities and participates in classroom reading times, a doctor, and a great friend. Her patients are very important to her; she always does what's best for everyone. She's a woman that will stay up throughout the night because she has a laboring mom that she is worried about, but still makes it to her clinic the next day for a full day of work. Wow, what a truly amazing and inspirational women!!!” –Dani Geer

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart” Her love for her patients is only felt in there heart and hers. The emotion you see, are true feelings of love from the heart.” –Kurt Engle (Husband)

“There is truly not one word to describe Dr. Engle I would describe her as calm and optimistic. She is not only an amazing family medical doctor to our community but also a friend. Being a great doctor requires more than years of medical education and thousands of hours spent in residency. You need to be trustworthy for your patients and in return trust them even when they may appear to be very similar to yourself or those that couldn't be more different. What do they all have in common? Is that they need you! And that is why I think Dr. Engle is a great assist to our community.” –Manda Smylie

“Intuitive! She has an amazing intuition that she follows and it has helped a lot of people!” –Laura Moore

“Genuine!” –Maureen Crane

“Selfless!  She gives and gives and gives and gives.  Not only to her patients, to her peers, the nursing staff, her family, her community, the Girl Scouts, the schools, her students, and lastly herself.  One dedicated women!” –Beckie Oliver

“Devoted! Dr. Engle is the epitome of the word. She is devoted to her family, patients, and community! I truly do not know how she keeps all the balls in the air but she has definitely earned the title of a professional juggler. She is devoted to being a wife and mother, regardless of the long hours she works, they are her priority. She is dedicated to her profession as a physician, always staying educated about best practice and changing recommendations in healthcare regarding her patients. She is loyal to memorial hospital of converse County and the community of Douglas. She continues to be the Chief of staff at MHCC; it's her expectations for safety and excellence that makes our hospital rise about the standard. She is very active in supporting the athletics in converse County as well as literacy in the schools by reading to her daughter's class each Thursday. I am very lucky to work alongside her as a professional and to call her a friend. Dr. Engle is a woman of strength and aspiration.” –Holly Sasser

"Capable" Dr. Engle is always capable to handle life in so many directions. She not only is an excellent Physician but also puts aside a great amount of devotion to her family. I would also think of her as a "Superwoman" We can always count on her, we are extremely fortunate to have the privilege to work with her in Labor and Delivery.  She will go above and beyond to make sure the patients are treated at the highest level possible. Thank you for all you do each and every day.” –Beth Pirnie

“Dedicated! She is dedicated to her patients, right from the start, in their mama's belly, through all the different challenges that life brings their way. But, maybe more importantly, she is dedicated to her family. Unless I am seeing her as a patient, I never see her without at least one of her daughters in tow. She volunteers at their schools, bakes them cookies, and takes them to all their different activities. She inspires me to be a better mom, through my health and my love. Thank you, Dee!” –Karla Penfield

Thank you Dee for all you do for our community! You truly are an inspiration and have touched so many lives with your great kindness and amazing heart. It was a honor to capture you at work doing what you love and wanted to say “Thank you”.

{Week Nine of Fifty-Two}

“Color outside the lines.”

Being the creative person I am, one thing I love to do is paint. It is my release from stress, and a way I can create something. This week’s lady is one who can take old, junkie, worn out things to new and improved one of kind things. She is full of creative ideas, has an amazing attitude about life, a heart of gold and loves all things junk. She is an inspiration for me and for all her clients and followers. Week nine of fifty-two goes out to the inspirational and super creative Merilee Miller of Flippin’ Junk.

If you have ever been out to Flippin’ Junk you have seen all the amazing antiques and all the junk turned into reusable, fresh, and creative things. Not only can you find that one of a kind piece of furniture, but Merilee can also do custom orders. She has been open since December of 2013 and I asked her what made her want to open her business. “I have a passion for creating” she said.  When opening a business you have to have a name, and so when I asked her what made her choose the name Flippin’ Junk she said “I wrote down thousands of names, and knew I wanted a name that meant something. So when it came down to it Flippin’ Junk was it. It means changing something worn out, outdated, one of a kind, and updating it into something beautiful and that not everyone else has.” I love this quote ““The things you are passionate about are not random. They are your Calling.” This fits Merilee to a T!

Merilee not only makes amazing things but I love her paints. The store sells General Finishes Milk Paint, Modern Masters Metal Affects, and now she can order General Finishes Chalk Style Paint. I redid my bedroom set with the milk paint and with the metal affect and it was a lot of work but it turned out beautiful. It has been over a year since I did my pieces and they still look brand new. This is why I love her products, the paint lasts when done right. “It is super easy to use, it’s the most durable paint I have come across and this is why I sell it. I believe in it!” Merilee says. The milk paint comes in 28 colors and all are amazing to work with. Merilee’s favorite color to paint with is patina green. It is teal in color and beautiful. I would say this is her signature color and it is the best seller in the store.

Merilee has also done vendor/junk shows. She has done two at the Kounrty Junkin Show in S.D. “They are a lot of work. I pretty much have to load the store in a trailer and it takes a lot of time. It’s a great experience and I have learned a lot.  You can find some pretty cool things at these shows but I find a lot of my unique things from picking. “I have traveled a lot of miles out of state. When I started I would go to auctions and sales. Now I have made a lot of contacts, and several people contact me to buy or pick through their things. Old farm houses and out of state sales can have a lot of unique and antique pieces and furniture. I can look at a piece and know what it could become. That’s when I know this piece belongs in my shop. Thanks to my husband for putting in a lot of work and hours with me. Without his support and understanding I wouldn’t be as successful as I have become.” Merilee says

There a lot of Junkers out there, as I call Merilee and all have their own unique way to transform a piece. One thing about Merilee is she stays true to who she is. She may find an idea on pinterest or from a vendor but always stays away from copying the local competition. This is what is so amazing about this woman she is one of a kind. “I don’t want my business to get huge, just to stay in business. So many times more than not I run into furniture picking and it has been done poorly. I pride myself in my work. I may take a piece and have to strip it, replace parts, or even finish work that wasn’t complete. I want my pieces to leave my shop 110% complete and use able.” Merilee says. You can see the pride she takes in all her pieces. From small projects to big she makes them with love. I asked her if it hurts her business being so far out of town. “I have weighed both the pros and cons. Yes it would be nice to be in town and be able to leave work. I think more of the community would know about my shop in town, but it is also nice having it attached to my home.” Merilee said.

I am truly grateful to this women and her many talents. She has taught me not only how to create beautiful things but also how to strive in the world with a creative mind. She is an amazing business women and has inspired me to be a better person in this thing we call life. She not only has her own business, she and her husband are in the process of adopting a little girl. They have opened their hearts and home to a child who has been through so much in life. This is a true inspiration and I know this little girl will grow up in a better place with a mother and father who adore and love her.

Getting to know Merilee….

What is your greatest accomplishments….My two children and my husband. My husband and I have also taken in a little girl who has been through so much. We can give her the life she deserves.

What is you biggest fear….To loss a child and my business failing.

What is the most important lesson you have learned in the business….It's ok to say NO!  I've gotten so far behind because I want to please everyone!  Well I haven't actually mastered that yet, but I'm working on it.

What do you love most about your job….I can create! Love doing a piece and create it how I want it and somebody loving it.

Who inspires you and why….Joanna Gaines from Fixer Upper.

What is your favorite thing to create….Copper and rust patina from Modern Masters.

What is something on your bucket list….Go to Mexico and sit on the beach and just relax!

What is your favorite quote….Just one? “Color outside the lines.” and “Seek beauty in the imperfections.”

One word to describe “Merilee” and why she inspires you…..

“Visionary!  When she sees dreams about something she wants, she looks past all of the obstacles in her path and focuses on her end wish.” –Rikki Horr

“Merilee has a heart the size of Wyoming. She always puts others first and has a smile a Mike long. So proud to call you friend” –Anne Saunders

“Awesome and Very Creative! She works very hard on everything she does has to be perfect or it’s not good enough.” –Paul Miller (Husband)

“Creative DIVA! She has made many things to decorate my store and my house. My favorite memory is taking my mom out to Flippin’ Junk and picking out all the items that Merilee swore wouldn’t sell because they were "ugly" and we all used a good laugh about that.” – Janna Wagner

“Amazing! She runs and owns her own business, has time for a 4 year old daughter, is always friendly and ready to help. I never understand how she has the energy!” –Windy Elliott

“Down-to-earth. I love working with someone that sees the beauty and potential in items that would have normally been discarded. When you can see the beauty in junk, you can see the beauty in whatever life throws at you.” –Off The Beaten Path

“Ingenious!  Merilee was really one of the first in this area to look at an old, worn down object and see the new life it was meant for.  She has such talent for seeing beyond the broken, chipped and scuffed exteriors and transforming each piece into a work of art.” –Stacy Wood

“Generous! Merilee inspires me every day to treat others with kindness and respect. Although we have similar small businesses, she could have easily treated me as I was her competition. She has always supported me and welcomed me with open arms. She has been my friend through furniture and paint questions and we have been able to share our ups and downs of our businesses and some of our personal lives. I am so thankful for her friendship and all the love she gives to everyone around her.” - JoEllen Hockley

 If you haven’t been to her store I would highly recommend it. Stop in and say “Hi!” you will not be disappointed.

{Week Eight of Fifty-Two}

“Patience is a virtue”

Week eight wow, we are already two months down and this has been so rewarding not only for me personally but for all the women in this amazing community. This week’s woman is such a positive example to not only the women in our community but for everyone who is looking to get fit and healthy. She is educated, funny, strong, and full of life. She has been the best thing that has happened for my confidence and my overall health. Week eight of fifty-two goes out to the inspirational and motivational Kim Pexton of The Body Shop or you may know her from Kim’s LIL Gym!

The Body Shop is 24 hour fitness facility offering a full weight room, cardio room and classroom. Dressing rooms are equipped with showers and lockers, this gym has it all. Kim and her son Carl Kosters own the gym and wanted the community to have other options for better overall health. I asked Kim what made her want to go into this business and she says “I’ve always liked community work.” She got her bachelor’s in social work in 1994, and then went for her master’s in social work. Counseling youth, family planning, tobacco prevention and social work is what Kim used to do, but now does it all in a different way. “I learned I can’t save everybody. I loved what I did, but got burned out and treated badly.” Kim says. I can’t even imagine how hard social work is, working with those who need help and sometimes not wanting to get help. But now you can see the work she does with her clients at the gym has been good for her and her clients.

Before she and Carl opened The Body Shop, which has now been open since October of 2014, Kim owned and operated Kim’s Lil Gym and has been a personal trainer for 10 plus years. I asked her what she had to do to get her training. “It’s really easy, only takes a weekend. I am certified in step, bosu, gliders, bar, pump, pt, and group.” Kim said. The Body Shop has five trainers including Kim. I asked Kim what made her want to become a trainer. She said “It is the closest thing to social work I could come to without diagnosing and charging someone in less than 45 minutes. I love community work and this is the perfect fit.” Kim has been my trainer now for several months and has been amazing. I found this quote that I think fits perfect, well for me and Kim anyways. “When your personal trainer asks you if you’re “ready”, that’s a rhetorical question!” She is an amazing trainer and I wouldn’t be doing as well as I have been without her. But I also pay her to torture me, now that is the crazy part but has been worth every penny.

The Body Shop has some amazing trainers and classes. There are 23 classes all on different days and times. I asked Kim which class is her favorite to teach and she says “Right now its step! We have a great group of people in this class.” The most important thing Kim wants to teach her clients and those who come to your gym is “overall health, being happy out of the gym as well as in the gym is most important. Happiness is a huge part of our lives and makes a huge difference.” Kim said. One thing I have learned through my own process and struggles is what seems impossible today will one day become your warm-up. I would have to agree with how your overall health is the most important. The gym and the people that work there all want the best for every client and the attitudes and positivity is amazing in The Body Shop. This place and these people working here have not only changed my life for the better but also many others lives. I am thankful and so blessed to have them all working with me to reach my goals and cheer me on.

Getting to know Kim….

What do you love most about your job….My clients, personal clients, my people!

What is your biggest fear….Losing my children or grandchildren.

What is your greatest accomplishment….My children! They are good people who love and I am so proud of who they are.

What is your biggest struggle….Myself, life is a struggle!

Who inspires you and why…. Women who take a chance even if it's on their health, their work, or their education.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career….To listen! I am not perfect.

What is something on your bucket list….A mini triathlon!

What is your favorite quote….“Patience is a virtue.”

One word to describe “Kim” and why she inspires you…..

“Fearless! She has vision and is not afraid to put her vision into action. She makes health and fitness approachable for many different people. Douglas is extremely lucky to have an intrepid entrepreneur like Kim.  Her bold and dynamic personality has made her successful and I have no doubt she has more to show us.” –Meghann Boggs

“Intense! She pushes me to do the best and work the hardest. She doesn’t let me get away with just getting by. She's also an inspiration to me because she gives respect to get respect.” –Freedom Howell

“Inspiring! Kim inspires and motivates me to work hard, push myself and to dig deep and to never give up.” –Tiffany Henry

“Joyful, full of energy!” –Virginia Bevers

“Tough! She is an inspiration to me because growing up she always put on a smile even if times were tough and got my sister and I through some tough times. She is one of the hardest working people I know. She went from having nothing and raising 2 kids to working hard and now having 2 successful businesses and living life to the fullest. She has been through more stuff then people will encounter in a life time, but she always put on a smile and worked through it as if nothing was wrong. That's why I look up to her. She is Tough!!” –Carl Kosters

“One word to describe Kim, that is impossible. Motivational! Kim is an inspiration because she does not only personal train clients,  she includes her own life struggles into helping you reach your own goals. Not many people will expose their fears, struggles or worries, but Kim does. She can bring someone out of a slump within your training time just being a great listener, and then giving her insight. She is an inspiration to me.” –Melissa Connolly

“Committed! She started her own business she likes to help people and she cares about other people's health.  Kim is goal oriented and she is funny.” –Teri Rabun

“Whew that's a tough one..... There is no one word to describe my mother! She's a woman of many traits!! She's a very independent, strong willed, go getter! When she says Do you do, but will also drop anything at any time to help whatever you need helped with! If you haven't noticed already, but if you’re a morning person and you happen to be at the gym @530 or whatever time It is she most likely has a smile on her face, I don't think that has ever changed about her! So if I had to describe my mother in one word I guess I would choose incredible.... Because she is! More than just my mother!! I love her!” –Abbie Kosters

“Hilarious! I love working out with Kim because she always keeps a smile on my face while pushing me to do my best! Kim truly cares about her clients and wants the best for them all!” –Sara Trujillo

“Spectacular!  She is an inspiration to be because she believes not only in herself, but in those around her.  She encourages those who may be in crisis at some level in their lives to become a better and stronger mirror of themselves.  She does this through the example of being herself! I recently was devastated with the loss of both my little brother and mother within 3 weeks of each other. Depressed and feeling low, I had the grim task of facing family and friends in California. Before I left, Kim unknowingly encouraged me to move forward, to fight back depression, with the strength of friends and family here. Her crazy glasses, high voltage personality, and c'mon now, let's get on with it' attitude has strengthened not only my relationships with my family but with my friends as well. Kim Pexton is a 'spectacular' example of an amazing inspiration without even knowing she does it!  I am honored to have her in my life!” –Patty Morrell

“Tenacious!” –Joani Fosmo

I would highly recommend The Body Shop to anyone. It is an amazing atmosphere, has amazing trainers, fun classes, and it has changed my life for the better. Kim is such an inspiration and works just as hard for you as you do for yourself. Thank you for letting me capture you, and your gym. Kim, you are a true inspiration and I am truly thankful for everything you have done for me!

{Fifty-Two Weeks}

I started this project not only for myself creatively, but for the women in our community! {Week Seven of Fifty-Two}

“Tough times don't last. Tough people do.”

This week’s woman is beyond creative, someone who uses her hands to create beautiful things! She is kind hearted, full of spunk, and would do anything for anyone if asked. After spending an afternoon with her and her daughters, watching them all work on orders, laugh at each other over memories growing up in the shop, I felt like one of the family. They all were so much fun to get to know and am so glad I could feature this woman in the 52 week project. Week seven of fifty-two goes out to the amazingly creative Lori Hoyt owner of The Boondocks Flower Shop and Gifts.

Anytime you walk into a flower shop you are filled with scents, colors, and maybe even are flooded with memories from that amazing bouquet of flowers you were given. I just love going into Boondocks, not only for the amazing flowers but for the ladies that work there. Lori has been owner of The Boondocks here in Douglas since 2006, but has been a florist since 1983 starting in Glenrock. Her daughters grew up in the flower shop, and one memory she shared with me was when her girls were little she would have them down at the shop while she was working. When orders of flowers would come in, she would use the big boxes to contain the girls and keep them from crawling everywhere.  It is almost the same now only with her grandchildren. You may go into the shop and it is just Lori, but 90% of the time you will go in and there will be littles crawling all over the floor or even running through the store with giggle, and smiles. Lori says “This is what makes it all worth it. My girls and the grandchildren, they are my life, my world. They are the most treasured part! So many memories I could share about raising children in the flower shop.”

There are so many amazing flowers out there and who wouldn’t love any of them? “You would be surprised how many people don’t like most flowers” Lori says. I asked Lori what her favorite arrangements are to create, she said that the fall fillers would be her favorite although she loves them all. She was raised on a ranch and the reward was always fall. Lori says “The harvest, the sale, the gathering of blessings, the beautiful changing colors. This is my most favorite time of the year and the fillers you can put in the bouquets are amazing to work with.”  I just loved this quote and wanted to use it just for Lori. “Flowers always make people, better, happier, more helpful; they are sunshine, food, medicine for the soul.”

I asked Lori what would be the busiest time of the year in the shop and she says “The busiest Day is Valentine’s Day, but the busiest time of year is May. With Mother’s Day, May Day, and graduations, we are slammed with orders.” She also said Christmas is pretty busy. I did her interview the week of Valentines because I knew the shop would be filled with beautiful flowers, her daughters would be in and out helping, and the smells would be amazing. The week before the shop was taking down the holiday stuff in prep for Valentines and I wasn’t worried at all. I knew the worker Lori was that it would be put back together and beautiful before her interview and it was. The shop was filled with pinks, reds, and everything looked like it had been there for months. That is one thing I have learned about Lori through the years. The shop maybe a mess one day but the next it was all back in order.

 Weddings are a lot of work but very rewarding. To see the final result and the bride with her bouquet is what the reward is. Boondocks averages about 30 wedding a year and one year she did 23 weekends with 33 weddings. Now that is crazy busy! But the most rewarding part of Lori’s job is the final tribute bouquets. “I love to honor the loved ones who may have passed. To work with the families to create that one of a kind, maybe even over the top bouquet to say that last goodbye. It is so important to have what they want and to create that for them with honor. To see their smile, to hear the praise but not do it for the reward, but to honor the loved one that has passed and give some comfort to those who are mourning.”

I am a very creative person and I think that is one reason Lori and I get along so well. We both have ideas and creative ways to show case it all. So I asked her how she gets her ideas and images in her head to show case her work. “I am always thinking, you could call it daydreaming. My hands are my tools, and I love to just create.” Lori said. This is one of the biggest struggles for a creative mind is to follow the rules, or do an arrangement that is done in a book. Lori loves to create something different for everyone, so when a client calls and puts a limit on the flowers they want, or what colors they can have or can’t, or even say they don’t like a certain flower can be a challenge. This isn’t hard to do, but with a creative mind like Lori’s it can be a struggle at times.

“The industry is changing! Back when I started there were no credit cards, we had what is called wire service. So when you see an advertisement for the flowers on TV you could call your local store and they would get the flowers ordered and then sent to the location you wanted whether in town or out of town. Now we have more options and for that it sometimes isn’t the best thing. One shop may charge this much for something, but it may cost even more at another.” Lori says. Lori wishes that people didn’t have to pay for flowers. “You shouldn’t have to pay for such a gift” You can tell just by the time and energy Lori puts into every bouquet how much her business means to her. One thing she doesn’t like about the shop is the business part. She would rather be creating and putting her creative thoughts and ideas together then doing the book work. I don’t blame her, I so agree. You can see the love she has for her job, and says ““I appreciate all the business through the years and all the clients/customers that come to her to create works of art for those they love. I love that I get to meet fun and different people from different places. It means so much, much more then I can say.”

Getting to know Lori…..

What is your favorite flower and why….Lots of flowers, I love them all! There is a season for every flower, so I can’t just pick one or even two.

What is the biggest struggle….Rules that others put on me, I don’t play well with others and sacrifices I have made.

What is the best thing about your job….CREATE! Use my hands to make someone’s day.

What is your greatest accomplishment….My girls, to be a mother. I thought being a mother was amazing until I had grandchildren and that is truly amazing.

What is your biggest fear….My house be a mess when I die.

Who inspires you and why….My grandma Evelyn! She was my hero! She made you feel invincible.

What is your favorite quote….My life is full of quotes; most would have to be edited.  But I love “Tough times don't last. Tough people do.”

One word to describe “Lori” and why she inspires you…..

“INTENSE!  My second favorite is formidable. She is intense in her creativity, her love for her family and friends, her fun, her anger, her life.   She inspires me to just get up every day and keep going and to do my best with what life has thrown in front of me.  She truly gives the best she has to her family and her clients.  She goes the extra mile for her customers and all of their special events that they entrust her with. Also, she is intensely funny.  She can make me laugh more than anyone.” -Kristy Grant

"Innovational! Lori is so creative and always has a way of knowing how to express my feelings through her beautiful floral designs. I always enjoy visiting with Lori in her shop.  There is always a friendly heartwarming atmosphere at Boondocks!” –Terry Burton

“Big Heart!” –Mary Grant

“Motivated! She puts her heart into making any event you need her for. I had her do my flowers for my wedding and she was so helpful throughout the whole thing. I knew that I could trust her to handle it, no questions asked. She puts a smile on so many faces with her business.” -Jill Seebaum

“Creative and loyal!” –Ashley Hinckley

 “Passionate & Compassionate!”  She has passion for her work and shows compassion to her clients. She loves weddings and takes great honor in her funeral pieces. They are her two favorite things to do.” –Danny Hoyt (husband)

"Caring! Lori and her family are not only amazingly talented florists, they are a very caring family that work very hard to put that extra special touch on each customer order.” –Erika Bevers

“Selfless.  She always goes above and beyond to help others. She never worries about how difficult it might be for herself, and she's always willing to reach out her hand. She has amazing gifts and every day she uses them to make others happy or to comfort them. She's always the first to say, I would love to help with that! It truly amazes me that her selflessness knows no bounds.” –Kaylann Blackburn

“Detailed!  Her flower arrangements show that she cares about them and the person receiving them.” –Kim Pexton

“Caring! She cares enough to give all she has to her family, customers and family. Ironically when her customers come in, whether for happy occasions or for a funeral, Lori gives it her all to make the most special arrangement. If for a “happy day” she makes the recipient smile, for a “wedding” she makes it as special for them as she would if it was one of her won daughters, if for a “funeral” she grieves with you in her own special way. She listens, sheds tears with you and gets to know your loved one. She makes flowers for the funeral that reflects you and your departed. So when customers leave they leave as friends. She cares enough to make each occasion special and unique as only Lori can. Even though she might be busy, she cares enough to drop whatever she is doing to help you. She would give the shirt, literally off her back to help you. Lori is indeed caring!” –Sharon Lovitt

“Fortitude! No matter what she faces, or the pain she endures, whether it be emotional or physical, she pushes on and continues to be her same strong willed, amazing self.” -McKenna Smith

“Selfless! She inspires me to work hard, and to always be there for someone in need, she amazes me how much she can help a family with just a bouquet of flowers. Her art in her work is truly one of a kind.” -Shaynna Hofstetter

“Heart! Lori Hoyt has more heart than most people I know... From her 10 dollar arrangements to her extravagant wedding bequests, nothing leaves the boondocks work room without the heart of the talented Lori behind it! I have grown up with Lori's girls and she has been like a mother to me. She inspires me with her work ethic, her will to always keep going, her ability to solve any problem, and her amazing eye to create! Lori once spent a late night outside the boondocks with me trying to solve life's problems... She had the simplest advice which was to be brave enough to fallow my heart, because I already knew where it was taking me! Lori Hoyt has heart; she is talented, brave, and most of all a friend!” -Christine Hatfield

I want to thank Lori and her girls for welcoming me into their shop and spending an afternoon with me. I loved that you all were so much fun to talk with, interview, and making me feel like part of the family. Lori is truly an inspiration and I am honored to call her friend!

“Love people, use things; NEVER confuse the two.”

{Fifty-Two Weeks}

{Week Six of Fifty-Two}

“Love people, use things; NEVER confuse the two.”

This week I am featuring a true woman of the Lord. Who puts her faith, family, friends, and even those she may not know before herself. She is humble, loving, kindhearted, and treasured by many in our small community. I have not known her for long, but in the short time I have she is a true inspiration. Week six of fifty-two weeks goes out to Elizabeth Ostrander, the faithful and loving!

I was invited into her home on a snowy cold day with welcome smiles, and warm hugs from her and her children. See Elizabeth homeschools her children in their beautiful country home. When I started this project I wanted to capture the true, raw moments of those who are inspirational to those in our community and this women was one who was nominated several times. Not only because she homeschools, but also because she has a grace about her in every situation. I got the tour of their amazing home from her three children, holding my hand and showing me everything they love about their home. While Elizabeth and I sit to chat, the two smaller kiddos went outside with their dad to walk their two adorable puppies’ and play in the snow, while her oldest and us sat at the kitchen table to chat. We talked about God, family, kids, school, and of course we had some girl talk. She loves to start her mornings with a devotion, but with small children somedays they have to wait until the evening. Her devotion to Our Lord is beautiful! “Like anything, if you want to be closer to something or someone you have to study it, in this case work at it. This brings me closer to The Lord. I study his word, and do my daily devotions.” Elizabeth says. I can see the love for the Lord throughout their home, and through their children. She makes me want to do better at this in my own home. She truly is inspirational!

 I asked Elizabeth what made her decide to homeschool her children “We began homeschooling when our oldest was showing readiness before her age would allow her to be in public school. At that time we lived 30 minutes from town and it wasn’t feasible to come in every day even if we could’ve. My parents worked in the school district for years, and I worked in the district before I was married as a para and also a school librarian in Colorado. “School” and learning had been a way of life for me. As my kids were growing we sort of just eased into the formal aspect and haven’t done anything since.” She says. I am just in awe of her. This is something I know I can not do. Ok well if I had to I probably could. But she does it, day after day, year after year, and she does it with such grace. Her children are in 4th grade, 1st/2nd, and preschool. As I watch them work on their school work, Liz has them all at their kitchen table. She says most days they may sit in their pajamas in the living room, relaxed and working on the couch.

A quote I found after my afternoon with this amazing family and I thought it fit perfect. “Homeschool moms are privileged to witness (sometimes after tears!) the first words our children will ever read. We’re privileged to know everything that’s on the “scope and sequence” for any given school year. Privileged to spend the day at the library when it’s pouring down rain and no one else is there. Privileged to struggle right alongside our kids until we both have the “ah-ha” moment.”

I always wondered what a homeschool mother said about the pros and cons of doing homeschool verses public school. “My pros would be I love that I can teach to their own level. If a child is struggling in an area, we can spend more time there and make sure understanding is happening. I also love that I can teach character qualities. I want my kids to know that fulfillment in life doesn’t come from being a totally selfish, self-serving person, but in a balance of loving and serving others as well.” She says. “My cons are familiarity can breed contempt at times. We have a close-knit family, but having a mom as a teacher and siblings as classmates can be tough. We try and stay balanced in this area by getting involved with people and things outside the home. Our kids need to learn from other adults and interact with other kids. They are in sports and service projects as well as a local home school group.” Elizabeth says. She has been thrilled with homeschooling, but also knows it is not for everyone. “I’m thankful we’re able to home school in Wyoming, but I’m thankful for a good school district here too. We’ve always said if schooling at home is ever not in the best interest of one of our children or our family as a whole, we’ll put them in public school. I want to partner with CCSD#1 even now, because we’re working toward the same goal. I am just on a much smaller scale.” Elizabeth says.

The Ostrander family use the general curriculum called My Father’s World. They add things to it and take certain things out, but say it’s been a good fit for them. This year they are studying Rome to the Reformation. I asked her what style of homeschooling would she classify in their home and she says “We tend to be a bit eclectic around here! Our curriculum is structured in unit studies, with some Charlotte Mason undertones and some classical as well. My primary goal is to install in my kids a true love of learning, that won’t end at graduation.” Elizabeth is the primary teacher in their home however; the biology lessons in the book don’t come close to the lessons her husband teaches the kids when he comes home after a hunting trip! Her middle daughter took a goose foot to show-in-tell at their home school group and showed the kids how to pull on an exposed tendon to get the foot the “wave”. Now that is my kind of kid. My girls would have loved to see that. “I love to get to study alongside my kids and hopefully pass along the love of learning. I want them to have curiosity and the ability to be thinkers. My hardest thing or what I like the least would have to be when I can’t seem to get through a certain area; it makes me question my abilities.” Elisabeth said.

We all know the life lessons we all encounter in the real word are so much more than any school can teach us, homeschool or public. I believe we all have a responsibility to our children to teach them right from wrong, the good and the bad, manners, good work ethics, and most important LOVE. It starts at home!

Getting to know Elizabeth…..

What is your biggest struggle….I love people and serving, encouraging, and helping. My biggest struggle is balancing time for me to refill my own cup. I used to think that if I wasn’t 100% at all times, saying no to someone or something, I was being selfish. I’ve learned that it’s a balance. I need to not get so worn out that I snap and get fussy with my own family.

What do you love most about being a mother….I LOVE my kids! I love that God has entrusted them to my husband and me, and that we get the honor of training these awesome little people. Do they have flaws? Yes, just like me. But it’s amazing to me how God uses my kids to teach me something about myself and Himself on a daily basis.

What is something on your bucket list….I love voice acting. I would love to sometime be involved in a professional production.

What is your greatest fear….I believe that all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose (Rom. 8:28). I do fear many things in this life, but when I hold them up against that truth, it helps me “talk down” the fear.

What is your greatest accomplishment….I have trouble answering this question! I tend to celebrate the small accomplishments, so even the big things have gotten celebrated numerous times, as small steps.

What is your favorite bible verse….I have two, Ephesians 2:10 “We are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to us to do.” And 2 Peter 3:18 “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

What is your favorite quote….”Love people, use things; NEVER confuse the two.”

One word to describe “Elizabeth” and why she inspires you…..

 “Pray-er! I aspire to be as mature as her when I pray. She remembers specifics, follows up after a time, and adds things to her prayer list continually.” –Ryan Andrews

“Genuine! She is amazing! It's so hard to think of one word! I admire her for many reasons. She is real, and a true light. She has a close relationship with Jesus, and she shows love genuinely in who she is, and her smile. A beautiful person, woman of God, mother/daughter, She shows His Love genuinely.” –Laura Sahlin

“Warm! She always seems to carry herself w such grace and acceptance of others. She speaks fluently and expresses her feelings effortlessly. All while inquiring into your day/life with great interest.” –Kate Grant

“Kind-hearted! She loves people and she loves the Lord. She is makes me smile and I am encouraged by her words, actions and faith!” –Abby Harris

“AUTHENTIC! She's such a kind and caring friend, full of such wonderful advice, and always willing to lend a listening ear. She's real and honest about her own struggles, never acting like she's got it all figured out! For years, I think it was the first time I heard her speak at MOPS, I've said I wish I could shrink her down and carry her around with me!!” –Cassie Taylor

“Unselfish and Compassionate! She is such a giving person. I tend to be more of a selfish person, but my wife gives freely. She will give anyone the benefit of the doubt, gives unselfishly, and wants nothing in return.” –Ryan Ostrander (husband)

"Timeless!  Elizabeth reminds me of so many women from the 40's and 50's that we seek to emulate today: Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly...her presence is gentle, graceful, tactful, tender, intelligent and Godly.  She carries herself with a measure of quiet strength.  She is a wonderful blessing!” –Becky Soske

"Caring! She genuinely cares about people of all ages and backgrounds and I've seen her demonstrate that in many ways in the 19 years that I've known her. Liz has many talents such as her music and drama background (and college degree in that). I've seen her use those talents in writing, directing, and acting in Christmas, Easter, and Sunday skits, plays, and musicals at church and as an outreach into the community. She's also led singing for the many children who come to Vacation Bible School, using a lot of patience and genuinely caring. She has cared for people who are sick or had surgery by organizing a meal ministry for others to bless them with meals in their time of need. As a Mentor Mom for MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers), I've had the pleasure of being in her discussion group, as well as hearing her speak to all of us on several occasions on a variety of subjects. Liz has suffered from migraines for years, as I have, but she rarely lets that get her down. She continues with her commitments and shows she cares as much as she is able, even while trying not to show how much she's hurting. Liz is a wonderful wife, mom, and daughter and is a great example to others. I'm proud to call Elizabeth (Liz) Ostrander my friend, because I know she genuinely cares!” –Jan Panasuk

“When I told my husband about your writings and that Liz was chosen his word was friendly. Mine is genuine. Liz is one of the most genuine, real, sincere people I know. She has such a friendly heart. We have a rare, close friendship that began not because we were neighbors but because her husband, Ryan helped save my son's life. Liz natural genuineness supported us throughout Colters journey. She will forever be a part of our life.” –Mandi Seipel

“Sweet! She is such an inspiration to me by her faith, her love for God, her parenting, love and her heart for others! She is one of the kindest women I have met! I am so blessed to call her my friend!” –Shirley ZumBrunnen

“Present! The word "present" was the word that came to mind when asked to describe Liz.  She is present with her family.  When she is talking to her children (you know how we sometimes say "Mmmhmm..." as they chatter and we keep working right along), she squats down to their level, looks in their eyes, and LISTENS. With her friends...she will go out of her way to ask about you and pray with you...I've cried just seeing her coming over to ask how I am (on a rough morning).  She is also unafraid to say when she has lost that presence with her family, and she will take a Facebook break to refocus on them. She also stands in the presence of God to get her focus and energy to do all that is on her plate.  She inspires me to live in the present with my family, my friends, and my God.  Thank you Liz!” –Tanya Reed

“Optimistic! She is always coming up with cool ideas and she looks at the amazing things in life and is very thankful for what she has and who God has made her to be. She is very creative and loving. She inspires me with how she takes good care of her kids, she is compassionate and she inspires me to be a kinder person.” –Brook Ostrander

It was a true blessing to spend the morning with you and your wonderful family. What you are doing with your children is amazing and I can see how it is the perfect fit for your family. You have such an amazing soul, and I am thankful to call you friend! Thank you for letting me be a part of your day, you are a true inspiration!
